Trump vows to get tough on nation's opioid crisis

Trump relatively quiet on opioid crisis despite campaign vows

Dr. Price's response veered from the President's Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis' recommendation to declare the crisis an official national emergency on July 31.

The whole scene resembled a sad, amateurish spectacle as Trump advertised the fact he has no idea what's behind the opioid crisis, or how the federal government should combat it.

Instead, Trump's prepared remarks focused on enforcement stopping the global influx of illicit drugs and alluded to the Mexican border.

With a focus on the Reagan-era idea of "just say no to drugs" and threats to meet the crisis with tougher law enforcement measures, critics quickly denounced the president's remarks and the approach they signal. Trump made no such declaration but did cheer as West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice said he would leave the Democratic Party to become a Republican.

"So they looked at this scourge and they let it go by, and we're not letting it go by", Trump said.

During the call, according to the Post, Trump lashed out at Peña Nieto for the quantity of illegal drugs that come into the United States from Mexico.

City officials and advocates had praised the commission's report for its emphasis on prevention and treatment - which dovetails with the recommendations produced by the city's own opioid task force. In the mid-2000s, prescription overdose deaths began to rise, following aggressive marketing and widespread prescribing of the drugs that started in the late 1990s. It would also pay to educate doctors about when they should prescribe painkillers.

Since his election, Trump has continued talking about the opioid crisis and making broad promises. Heroin is now predominantly supplied by Mexican cartels.

Trump's initial federal budget called for a 2 percent increase in drug treatment programs and would provide funds to increase border security to stop the flow of drugs into the country.

Lawsuits have been filed by states against pharmaceutical companies, which people have compared to the tobacco settlement from the 1990s.

The secretary said President Donald Trump "believes that we will treat it as an emergency - and it is an emergency".

On Tuesday morning, before he announced he would speak, Trump tweeted a report from Fox & Friends about a new study that says overdose deaths have been underreported.

This was the first event listed on the president's public schedule since he started his "working vacation" on Friday.

The former Maryland health secretary and Baltimore health commissioner is among those reacting to President Donald Trump's briefing Tuesday on the opioid epidemic in America.

"It's symbolic mostly and it actually involves a lot of reporting and paperwork", Richard Frank, a professor of health economics at Harvard Medical School, told me.

"There's a recommendation on one hand and then it's a rebuffing of that recommendation and we would encourage the President and those in Congress to be encouraging the President that we need to have a very aggressive effort", Mayor Steve Williams said. "When you have the capacity of Yankee stadium or Dodger stadium dying every single year in this nation, that's a crisis that has to be given incredible attention and the president is giving it that attention".

But when asked about it Tuesday, Price suggested that declaring a national emergency is unlikely because most recent declarations have been focused on a specific, time-limited problem, such as the Zika virus or Superstorm Sandy.

"We believe at this point the resources we'd need or the focus we need to bring to bear to the opioid crisis can be achieved without the declaration", Trump added.
