Tillerson: US open to talks with N. Korea despite missile launch

North Korea fires short-range missiles into the sea

The missile was launched from a site in the North Korean province of Gangwon and flew for about 250km (150 miles), officials in the South said.

The incident happened amid rising tensions between the US and North Korea, which has been warned by President Trump about missile build-up and development of nuclear armaments.

After weeks of relative calm, North Korea has carried out three missile test launches, with US and South Korean officials describing them as "ballistic missiles" fired toward the East Sea, not far from Japan.

The South Korean Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said the projectiles flew in a northeasterly direction for about 250 kilometres (155 miles) into the sea.

"The military is keeping a tight surveillance over the North to cope with further provocations", the ministry said.

The launches come as tens of thousands of South Korean and United States troops take part in joint military drills in the South, which Pyongyang views as a highly provocative rehearsal for an invasion of its own territory.

Earlier this month Trump had warned that North Korea would be met with "fire and fury", if it continued with its threats.

"Despite the recent tensions, despite the missile launches, tourism continues here", Ripley said.

The U.S. military's Pacific Command said it had detected three short-range ballistic missiles, fired over a 20 minute period.

Shells hit islands standing in for South Korea's Baengnyeong and Yeonpyeong islands while special forces landed in rubber boats or parachuted in and "wiped out the desperate enemy with various combat methods", the Korean Central News Agency said.

Mr Tillerson said he was "pleased" to see Pyongyang had "demonstrated some level of restraint that we've not seen in the past". North Koreas large-sized artillery rockets blur the boundaries between artillery systems and ballistic missiles because they create their own thrust and are guided during delivery, Kim said.

Washington has long argued that any future talks with North Korea must have the aim of it giving up its nuclear weapons, something North Korea has rejected as long as the United States maintains a "hostile policy" towards it.

This latest North Korean missile test would be the 12th ballistic missile test this year. U.S. officials say none of the missiles posed any threat to North America at any point.

Just last week, Tillerson attempted to dial down tensions by noting there had been no missile tests or "provocative acts" from North Korea since a United Nations Security Council resolution sanctioning Pyongyang was passed earlier this month. All US and Russian ballistic missiles are solid-fuel models.

The North American Aerospace Command (NORAD) determined the missiles "did not pose a threat to North America".

The North's move was immediately reported to President Moon Jae-in.
