This mind-blowing video reveals the future of smartphone cameras

The Verge reports that his new technology, the 2nd generation Qualcomm Spectra ISP (Image Signal Processor), will allow phones to generate, nearly instantaneously, a 3D image from your phone's camera that can be explored in high-resolution. A new camera architecture will be coming to the new ISPs, with computer vision, image quality, and power efficiency expected to be boosted in new Snapdragon chips for mobile and VR. The ISPs include three modules - iris authentication module, passive depth sensing module and an active depth sensing module.

The new generation of the ISP also features image stabilisation to reduce vibrations and technology to predict and compensate for a camera's motion when recording, both of which will improve video capture.

For smartphones to have depth-of-field capabilities, manufacturers have to do one of two things - either use lasers for detecting depth like in the early Tango phones, or use dual cameras, with the latter being the more trendy option these days.

The next generation Qualcomm Spectra ISP will aid Extended Reality, computer vision and photography purposes. See, with more accurate depth-sensing technologies, augmented reality - think "Pokémon Go" and the like - will see drastic improvements. They also boast improved video quality, gyro-based image stabilization, improved face-detection capabilities, and accurate mapping for XR simulations.

Apple is all set to add its newly-patented facial-recognition tech to its upcoming iPhone 8, while Android phone makers are seeking Qualcomm's support to offer advanced features on its forthcoming Snapdragon chipsets.

The new imaging modules are part of the Spectra Module Program of the company. An IR sensor on the phone can see the dots and accurately record their distance. But it's not just accuracy: active depth sensing can help with low-light situations, too. So bokeh with one camera sensor? The laser, which uses an invisible infrared beam, is shot through a small cover that creates a pattern wherever you shine it. Today, Qualcomm has announced some of the new features you'll find in its next major mobile chipset, giving us a glimpse at what's to come from smartphones and VR products in 2018.
