South Africa's no-confidence vote on president fails

South African President Jacob Zuma could be removed from office following an upcoming no-confidence vote

"They will realize in 2019 when we win in a big number once again".

The numerous attempts to dislodge Zuma from office have led to some confusion over how many no-confidence votes he has faced.

Criticism of Zuma from within the African National Congress (ANC) has grown amid multiple corruption scandals and South Africa's mounting economic woes, while the celebrated party of Nelson Mandela has declined sharply at the polls.

Mosiuoa Lekota, leader of opposition party Congress of the People, described the secret ballot against the President as "groundbreaking".

The ANC leadership election in December will involve thousands of members and at least 90 percent will come from ANC branches where Zuma is strong.

Mr Zuma is accused of corruption and mismanagement - charges he denies. He has been under fire for numerous allegations of corruption.

Opposition parties have planned a march in the streets of Cape Town where parliament is located to push for Mr Zuma's removal.

"He still won first prize under the hardest conditions - a secret ballot", Nomura analyst Peter Attard Montalto said.

The ANC had its worst showing previous year in municipal elections as Zuma faced allegations of corruption.

"Since the dawn of our democracy, the stakes have never been higher", Mmusi Maimane, leader of the main opposition Democratic Alliance party, told lawmakers.

Kodwa said Zuma was on his way to address supporters outside Parliament.

The ruling ANC party has a large majority in the house, and would choose the incoming national leader. A similar replacement process kicked into gear after the ANC recalled former President Thabo Mbeki in 2008. According to the website Africa Check, three motions to remove Zuma have gone to a vote; the remaining two failed because they were either withdrawn or amended.

Of the 384 votes cast in the 400-member parliament this evening, 198 were against the motion and 177 in favour of it.

He said the Constitution provides for motions of no confidence or to dissolve Parliament.

The draft also says Zuma has "lost all sense of rationality and sound judgment".

The opposition needed 50 members of the ANC to vote against the President, but there were not enough defectors. If the motion succeeds, he must resign.

On Monday, National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete announced she had heeded the call for a secret ballot. Marches against Zuma and, by the ANC Cape Town region, for Zuma. The currency immediately strengthened on the news that the vote of no confidence will be a secret ballot.
