Sikkim standoff:China warns Indian troops of 'annihilation'

Sushma Swaraj claimed that she had not delivered any speech in the Bandung conference the opposition parties have downloaded a purported speech and will attach it as proof said people aware of the matter

Global Times article, quoting a researcher Hu Xi Yong from Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, said that the standoff between the forces of the two countries would not last long as China's limited military action could start within two weeks.

The standoff began in mid-June this year when China attempted constructing a motorable road in the disputed Doklam region-at the tri-junction of India, China and Bhutan-considered by India as Bhutanese territory, and viewed by China as its own. China claims the region as its own, even as it belongs to Bhutan and there was a 2012 agreement between the countries that any change in the status quo would be done in consultation with the three parties - India, China and Bhutan.

Talking about how likely it is for this standoff to develop into a fully fledged military conflict, Gokhale said that the conflict is not inevitable because India-China have a tense border problem, which goes back for decades.

He said that India and the U.S. have an "implicit defence relationship" and that the two countries can safely rely on each other.

The road China is trying to build leads towards the Indian border and could prove strategically useful to the east Asian superpower.

He referred to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's statement in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday that India would continue to engage with the Chinese side through diplomatic channels "to find a mutually acceptable solution on the basis of the Astana Consensus between our leaders".

Desai also suggested that India should not make the mistake of equating the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) with the Pakistani Army.

Karat said that the government was downplaying the issue, and it does seem as if some (China claims only 40 of the 400 Indian soldiers now remain) troops have been withdrawn.

"War is not a solution to anything", Swaraj said.

The editorial added, "India is concerned that the road China was building in Doklam might threaten the security of the Siliguri Corridor", however, it questioned that "how does that justify Indian troops' incursion into another country in utter disregard of global treaties?"

Despite China's numerous diplomatic representations, its foreign ministry said, India has not only not withdrawn its troops but has also been making "unreasonable demands" and is not honest about a resolution.

Karat was critical of the "confused approach" of the Modi government regarding bilateral relations with China and neighbouring countries.

Desai did not consider the Doklam standoff a mere India-China issue but rather equated it to the geo-political tensions across the globe, primarily in the South China Sea. "A solution can not be derived out of war", she said. But Bhutan's official statement isn't to say that it does not wish to resolve border disputes with China.

China and India have always been suspicious of each other, a legacy of the 1962 border war, India's playing host to exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and China's close relations with India's regional rival Pakistan.

"India, which has stirred up the incident, should bear all the consequences".
