Public Solar Eclipse Viewing Party at Science Spectrum

Library to host solar eclipse programs

If you're looking for a prime place to view the total solar eclipse on August 21, the Kansas City Library downtown might be a good option.

The Sun will be in deepest eclipse of the Moon at approximately 1:09 in the afternoon, shortly after lunch.

On that upcoming Monday afternoon, if you take a few minutes, you will be able to see the Sun gradually vanish and take the shape of a crescent Moon.

The 2017 Total Solar Eclipse is right around the corner and if you plan to watch it, you'll want to make sure your eyes are protected. "When I look at the sun, it's blindingly bright'".

Eclipse Ground Rules you will be asked to move into a controlled area where the glasses will be distributed and you may view the eclipse safely and here a narrative.

You will definitely notice that the sunlight has dimmed. The filters are also created to let through enough light to view the event comfortably.

"It is not safe to look at the eclipse - any of the partial phases leading up to or after totality - without proper precautions", said Dulsky.

Peering through X-rays, smoked glass or regular sunglasses also do not provide the protection that's needed, he warns.

"These eclipse glasses are very dark-you can't see anything through them, except the Sun". And don't point your iPhone at the sun or you'll fry the camera mechanism.

He says the damage isn't immediately apparent because the light-sensitive cells of the eye will keep working for hours after the injury before finally going kaput.

He cautions that it is not OK to look at the sun through a telescope or binoculars while wearing eclipse glasses, because those kinds of optical devices need their own special filters. The next total solar eclipse in the US will occur on April 8, 2024. For more information on Cornhusker city celebrations to attend prior to the eclipse, visit neclipse17.com. Free. Co-sponsored by Friends of the Jackson County Public Library. Postal employees Pamela Wilson, left, and Teresa Fulton demonstrate the first-of-its-kind stamp by transforming the solar eclipse image into the moon from the heat of a finger on the black disc.
