North Korea vows harsh retaliation over fresh United Nations sanctions

Moon names new DAPA chief in effort to curb corruption

North Korea stressed it will not be rattled by the sanctions and vowed to push through with its nuclear weapons programme despite calls for it to return to the negotiating table to discuss denuclearization, according to its Korean Central News Agency. He says stopping the launches would be the "first and strongest signal".

He said: 'We'll know it when we see it.

North Korea's Minister of Foreign Affairs Ri Yong-ho is also participating in the Asean meeting in Manila where he plans to attend a regional security forum later on Monday. He's not specifying what those are. In typical North Korean media bluster, it said the US mainland would, quote, "sink into an unimaginable sea of fire on the day it dares to touch our country".

The sanctions were a "direct challenge to our republic" and "an effort to completely prevent economic development", North Korean state media said on Monday. And the White House says they committed to fully implement all relevant resolutions and to urge the worldwide community to do so as well.

North Korea's foreign minister Ri Yong Ho said Seoul's proposals lack sincerity when South Korea is imposing sanctions on the North with the U.S., the official added.

Mr Tillerson met with Mr Wang and Mr Lavrov as part of an annual gathering of top envoys of 26 Asia-Pacific nations plus the European Union for talks on regional security known as the ASEAN Regional Forum.

Ri was spotted at the gala smiling and toasting with the other foreign ministers. But we have to underline that North Korea is determined to stay nuclear. The Trump administration is cautiously embracing China's apparent newfound cooperation.

And in an ominous threat the North Koreans said: 'There is no bigger mistake than the United States believing that its land is safe across the ocean'.

Susan Thornton is the top USA diplomat for Asia.

Thornton says the USA wants to ensure that with the new sanctions, there's "not this kind of episodic back and forth that we've seen".

China also called on the USA and South Korea to exercise restraint and reign in their own military exercises in the region.

About 40 percent of Thai exports to the United States come from US firms, officials say.

The US-drafted resolution bans North Korean exports of coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood following Pyongyang's two intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July.

They called on ASEAN "to maximize pressure on North Korea".

The Chinese envoy also urged the United States and South Korea not to increase tensions because the situation is in a "critical point". It is being cheered on by President Donald Trump.

"The U.S. should aim for peace and co-existence rather than geopolitical dominance". Shin Beomchul of the Seoul-based Korea National Diplomatic Academy said sanctions that can force a change from North Korea would include a ban on China's annual, mostly free shipment of 500,000 tons of crude oil to North Korea and the deporting by United Nations member states of the tens of thousands of North Korean workers now dispatched overseas.

North Korea said it will launch "thousands-fold" revenge against the United States over the adoption of tough UN sanctions imposed after its intercontinental ballistic launches.

The contending states should clarify their claims peacefully in accordance with a 1982 maritime treaty and global law, according to the three, who met on the sidelines of annual meetings of Asia-Pacific foreign ministers in Manila, including those from China and Russian Federation.

SMITH: The U.S. and the United Nations have been imposing sanctions on North Korea for years. She says it was a "very, very good outcome". Tensions flared alarmingly in recent years over China's island-building works in one of the most-contested regions, where USA naval and aerial "freedom of navigation" patrols have challenged Beijing's claims.

Their meeting took place on the sidelines of a series of conferences linked to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
