Iran Parliament ratifies motion to counter US' 'terrorist' acts

Iran Allocates $520Mln for Missile Program in Response to New US Sanctions - AFP

The bill will allocate $260m (£200m) to Iran's ballistic missile programme and the same amount to Quds Force, the special forces unit of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard. The 27-article draft was endorsed after it was brought forward in Parliament by the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission in July.

In a session Sunday, 240 lawmakers voted for the bill, with only one abstention, to confront "America's terrorist and adventurous actions" in the region.

Araghchi, also in defense, said the countermeasure bill is "much stronger" than US Congress bill against Iran, since it also extends support to the Islamic Republic's armed forces and all related ministries.

Iran's parliament has voted in favour of boosting investment in its missile defence and foreign operations programmes by more than $500m (£386m).

"Iran boasts potential and actual options to confront hostile USA actions", said Araqchi.

Deputy Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi is seen walking in Majlis (Iranian Parliament) on August 13, 2017.

Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi said the government fully supports the new law passed by the parliament against the United States terrorist and adventurous measures in the region, describing it as a "wise" and "appropriate" move against Washington's enmities towards Iran. However, Israel believes Iran's weapons are an existential threat.

The 27-point bill will also impose sanctions on U.S. military and intelligence officials in the region.

The government must also use all available worldwide capacities, including the United Nations Human Rights Council, to take action against the U.S. over its human rights violations, "like its crimes against humanity in Yemen".
