Equities fall on rising tension between US & North Korea

S. Korean shares extend losses on heightened tensions over N. Korea

USA stock futures eased early Wednesday, as investors kept watch on an increasingly tense situation between the North Korea and the U.S.

"What has changed this time is that the scary threats and war of words between the United States and North Korea have intensified to the point that markets can't ignore it", said Shane Oliver, head of investment strategy at AMP Capital in Sydney, as quoted by Reuters.

The London market endured heavy losses on Friday as America's stand-off with North Korea inspired another round of selling.

Traders' screens were awash with red in Asia and Europe as investors fled to safe haven assets after US President Donald Trump doubled down on his North Korea rhetoric. Early Friday, the ICE Dollar Index was up just 0.04% to 93.437. Germany's DAX fared better, trading only 0.2 percent lower at 11,989. Netflix also fell, giving up $2.58, or 1.4 percent, to $175.78.

Trump suggested in remarks on Thursday that his comments threatening North Korea with "fire and fury" may not have been tough enough.

The statement said the plan, which involves the missiles hitting waters 19 to 25 miles from the island, could be sent to leader Kim Jong Un for approval within a week or so. Wall Street was poised for a soft opening with S&P futures and Dow futures both down 0.2 percent.

S&P 500 e-minis were up 1.5 points, or 0.06 percent, with 300,073 contracts traded. Subsequently, the yield on the benchmark ten-year note, which moves opposite of its price, dropped 4.2 basis points to 2.241%.

Disney dropped 3.9 percent, its biggest single-day loss in more than a year, after the media giant reported a weak quarter and said it would pull its movies from Netflix and start two of its own video streaming services. Discovery Communications fell 70 cents, or 2.9 percent, to $23.60.

Nvidia's quarterly revenue in its data center and automotive businesses missed estimates, dragging the chipmaker's shares down 5.43 percent. Silver gained 47 cents, or 2.9 percent, to $16.86 an ounce. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 tumbled 1.3 percent, while Seoul's Kospi fell 1.1 percent. Brent crude, used to price worldwide oils, gained 56 cents to $52.70 in London.

The September crude contract was up 20 cents to US$49.76 per barrel and the September natural gas contract was up seven cents to US$2.95 per mmBTU.

Nordstrom Inc.(JWN) shares rose 1.6% after the retailer late Thursday posted earnings that beat expectations (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/nordstrom-shares-rise-after-retailer-tops-views-sales-rise-2017-08-10), along with a sales rise. They suggest the USA and China, a North Korean ally, could work together to de-escalate the situation.
