DJ in Taylor Swift groping case calls backstage photo 'awkward'

Taylor Swift's defense team digs into former DJ in cross-examination to kick off trial

Taylor Swift to turn up in a federal court in Denver soon, as lawyers for the pop star and a Colorado Radio Personality "David Mueller" start jury selection for lawsuits over whether the former disc jockey "groped her" four years ago, during a photoshoot.

Mueller sued Swift, her mother and her radio promotions director in 2015 for $3 million in damages.

The 2013 photo of Swift, Mueller and Mueller's girlfriend taken at the pre-concert event in Denver is a key piece of evidence in Mueller's suit claiming he was sacked after being falsely accused by Swift.

Swift, who's also expected to testify, claimed in a countersuit obtained by ABC News that Mueller "took his hand and put it up my dress" during the publicity event, and it "was not an accident".

Under questioning from his lawyer, Mueller recounted he may have made contact with the side of Swift's body or brushed her arm and hand while they posed for pictures, but when asked if he had grabbed her backside, Mueller said flatly, "No, I did not".

After confusion on Mueller's behalf, Baldridge moves on.

The pop star has since responded with a suit of her own. After all, she is showing up for a trial wherein she is both defendant and counter-claimant. Mueller also said he spilled water on a second computer, and accidentally smashed an iPad.

"I love how she's suing him for $1 because she doesn't need the money but she wants to make it a point that women don't need to take this", said Vega Zaringlee, 12.

Mueller's suit didn't seek a specific monetary amount but an expert retained by the ex-radio host determined that almost $3 million was a fair compensation for damages.

On Tuesday, jurors were shown a photograph of the alleged assault at a VIP room meet-and-great before the gig on 2 June 2013.

Mueller testified that he drew that conclusion because Swift didn't welcome him into the photograph and paid more attention to his girlfriend at the time. The trial is expected to last around nine days; likely until 17 August.

Mueller also testified that he felt "invisible" after concluding that Swift wasn't paying him professional respect during the one-minute meeting backstage. The 27-year-old singer, who has alleged that Mr. Mueller groped her when she was 23, attended the initial proceedings this week as potentials jurors were asked questions ahead of the trial. On June 2013 when Taylor Swift had a show at the Pepsi Center, Mueller had been invited to a meet-and-greet, where he apparently touched her inappropriately.

Baldridge told jurors in his opening statement that Swift is "absolutely certain" she was sexually assaulted by Mueller, and the photo is "damning" proof of it. "What possible motivation would Taylor Swift have to make up a story?"

In addition, Baldridge referenced Mueller's description of Swift in a court deposition as cold and standoffish.

Swift's lawyer Douglas Baldridge accused Mueller of giving different accounts of what happened and of further victimising the popstar.

A former radio DJ has insisted in court that he did not grope Taylor Swift.
