Concerns over "increasingly confrontational" North Korea dispute

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson

European stocks may open on a sluggish note on Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump warned that North Korea would face fire and fury like the world has never seen before, if Pyongyang keeps threatening the United States.

Numerous details are secret but if a USA president were ever to order a nuclear strike, we know this: the order would be transmitted to the crew who would fire the missiles in a message 150 characters long - about the same as a tweet. "It is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before", Trump wrote just before 8 a.m. ET from his golf resort here.

Trump went on to say, "Hopefully we will never have to use this power, but there will never be a time that we are not the most powerful nation in the world".

Gorka's statements come amid confusion about the administration's policy toward North Korea after a series of statements that have been dramatically different in tone and have sent starkly different messages.

The credit really lies with former President Obama and defense hawks in Congress who funded the work, especially during a time when the federal budget is subject to spending limits.

An adviser to President Donald Trump said it was "simply nonsensical" to think that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson should discuss U.S. military decisions in relation on North Korea.

The major US averages ended down about 0.2 percent overnight, with the Dow snapping a 10-day winning streak, as Trump's remarks added to concerns about rising tensions between the USA and North Korea.

"I think that the President, again, as commander-in-chief, I think he felt it necessary to issue a very strong statement directly to North Korea", Tillerson said.

And the president has done little, if anything, to improve the U.S.'s nuclear arsenal.

This morning, North Korea said it was "carefully examining" a plan to strike the United States territory of Guam with ballistic missiles.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says he doesn't believe there is "any imminent threat" from North Korea, including to the USA territory of Guam.

"I think Americans should sleep well at night, have no concerns about this particular rhetoric of the last few days", Tillerson said.

Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to the president, made the comments to the BBC amid reports of division within the Trump administration on how to handle North Korea.
