Rail connectivity in flood affected portions of Bihar and West Bengal continues to be affected with some improvement in situation today.

Floods claimed 17 more lives in six northern districts of West Bengal, even as the overall situation improved on Thursday, officials said.

Amidst the fear of starvation death of wildlife marooned on highlands, the state forest department and several wildlife NGOs has also intensified relief and rescue operation in wildlife sanctuaries. The toll in the third wave of floods in the state has risen to 49.

Of the 629 designated relief camps in the state, 89 are in Morigaon where 1,025 of the state's 1.38 lakh displaced people are taking shelter. With these deaths, 123 people have died so far in the floods in Assam. The state government has pressed into service 50 rescue teams comprising columns of Army, NDRF, SDRF in the affected districts.

Around 2,970 villages were under water and 1.43 lakh hectares of crop area were damaged, the ASDMA said. The river is already flowing near the danger level from Gandhi Ghat in Patna to Bhagalpur and Katihar.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar cancelled his planned aerial survey of the Bettiah and Valmikinagar areas due to bad weather. He had transferred the chief medical officer of Gonda and three other officials over alleged laxity in flood relief works. Almost two lakh people are taking shelter at relief camps. Chief Minister Sonowal requested the Brahmaputra Board to set up a unit in Majuli and upscale its manpower to tackle flood in the island as well as in the state. The railway tracks at various places in Bihar, north Bengal and Assam continued to be submerged.

The railway communication to Assam-the gateway of Northeast region-from the rest of the country remained suspended since Sunday.

The Eastern Railway cancelled 14 mail and express trains today.
