United States to ban citizens from travel to North Korea, tour operators say

Following the incident, Young Pioneer Tours said it would not accept USA nationals for North Korea tours.

North Korea's tourism agency has launched a website offering holiday options ranging from surfing to rice planting, despite strong US warnings to avoid travel to a nation where several trips have ended in jail.

"North Korea doesn't do anything out of the kindness of their hearts". Whereas, North Korea leader Kim Jong-un called the launch a "gift package" for the USA on the anniversary of its Independence Day. The circumstances surrounding his death are not clear, including why he fell into a coma.

Strict warnings against travel to North Korea had already been in place, but Washington toughened its stance after the death in June of Otto Warmbier.

North Korea has yet to respond to South Korea's proposal to hold the military meeting and a separate meeting next month to resume the temporary reunions of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.

US tourist Otto Warmbier, centre, died last month shortly after he was released from a North Korean prison.

The U.S. government has not confirmed this information. A few administration officials, who viewed satellite imagery and studied North Korean radar emissions, said that there was an indication of test preparations and the country could test missile in next two weeks.

The three Americans who are known to be in prison in North Korea were not tourists.

Travellers wanting to visit the North must go with a tour company.

Seoul's overture came after North Korea claimed to have carried out its first test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile on July 4. Efforts by private tour operators to prevent or resolve past detentions of USA citizens in the DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] have not been successful.

But Miyagi said the public should simply liken the preparation for a doomsday to the work being done to prepare for a hurricane and tsunami.

"Travel between different cultures breaks down the preconceptions that you have about different cultures and breaks down the stereotypes that you have", he said.

They say the proposed bill came after at least 17 Americans were detained in North Korea in the last 10 years, Reuters reported.

The US will announce the ban within a couple of days, said Simon Cockerell, general manager of Beijing-based Koryo Tours.

Travel agencies organising trips to the isolated country had said earlier on Friday they were informed of the impending change.

After 17 months in detention, he was released in a coma in June, evacuated to the United States and died in OH a few days after.
