NY commuters endure start of 'summer of hell'

Passengers in New York's Penn Station ride the escalators Monday

For hundreds of thousands of commuters heading into NY on Monday, the first day of disruptions due to extensive fix work at Penn Station brought some confusion, a bit of overcrowding and some delays yet, apparently, no major problems at the start of what figures to be an arduous two-month period. Transit officials announced at Penn Station that the train had derailed.

Amtrak is beginning extensive repairs to tracks and signals in Penn Station Monday, prompted by two recent derailments and other problems that spotlighted the station's aging infrastructure. Amtrak is also reducing train service between NY and Washington.

All three canceled some services, rerouted others, and warned travelers to expect delays throughout the duration of the repairs, which began on Monday and are scheduled to be done September 1.

No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 trains ran regularly from Atlantic Avenue, with many arriving about four minutes apart, for the first day of rerouting LIRR trains from Penn Station.

To aid riders, MTA offered reduced fare for some LIRR riders, and added ferries and charter bus services to commuters.

While the commute had gone about as well as it could for most, the halls leading from NJ Transit trains to PATH trains were packed for over an hour and some people seemed bewildered at their new routine.

NJ Transit spokesman Charles Ingoglia declared the morning commute a success, ; but said there was room for improvement, including directing people to a less crowded PATH entrance. "We have to survive, '" Codey said.

"It was crowded", she said.

Now the situation is a bit strict, where the New Jersey Transit Rail Service has suspended it's all in and out trains from Penn Station, which disrupted the area's population who has to take a different route to reach their destinations. "There's been plenty of advance notice but it still doesn't diminish the anger and frustration that people have felt here".

State Governor Andrew Cuomo had predicted the partial shutdown at New York's Pennsylvania Station would cause a "summer of hell" for the 600,000 who ride the train in and out of the station beneath Madison Square Garden. "I've been using LIRR for the past 11 years and it's been good", said Tamer Seoud, chief financial officer for the non-profit Lutheran Social Services of NY.

Authorities have asked commuters to give themselves more time to travel until the end of August when work is scheduled to be completed.

Booker said it's time for Trump to "put up or shut up". To minimize disruption to the commuter services, Amtrak historically has done most of the track work overnight and on weekends.
