Iraqi Government Has No Clue of 39 Missing Indians

External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj will hold talks with her Iraqi counterpart during which focus is expected to be on the missing Indians mostly Punjabis who were kidnapped by the ISIS June 2014 from Mosul city

Prem Singh Chandumajra, an MP of the BJP's ally Shiromani Akali Dal, too raised the issue in Lok Sabha and demanded that External Affairs Minister should tell the truth about Indians kidnapped in Iraq.

In a major setback to India's efforts to trace the missing Indians in Iraq, the Iraqi Foreign Minister said that he is not sure about the fate of 39 missing Indians.

Swaraj had told the family members that an Iraqi official quoting intelligence sources had told Singh that the kidnapped Indians (mostly from Punjab) were deployed at a hospital construction site and then shifted to a farm before they were put in a jail in Badush.

Apart from meeting Sushma Swaraj, the Iraqi Foreign Minister called on Vice President Hamid Ansari on Monday.

The Iraqi minister had also stressed that best efforts were being made to get information about the 39 missing Indians.

"We want the government of India to show seriousness in this case so that we can find out what really happened to the 39 men from our country", said Gurpinder Kaur, a representative of the families. Media report from Badush had also suggested that the jail was an abandoned structure.

The government had earlier said the hostages were last seen at a prison in Badush, near Mosul, which is witnessing one of the fiercest fights between Islamic State militants and joint Iraqi and U.S. forces.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, right, greets her Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim al-Jaafari in New Delhi, Monday, July 24, 2017. He said some IS-held areas were still being cleared. We have no substantial evidence that they were killed or they were still alive, so we can't say anything to you in that regard.

The Iraqi foreign minister described the information as "inaccurate" and said the IS is known to circulate information that is "untrue".

Swaraj has met the families of the 39 persons around a dozen times since they were abducted in June 2014 and assured them that the government was doing everything to locate them.

Iraq is already the second highest supplier of crude to India, but there are plans to further increase the supply with the oil ministers set to meet in November, Al-Jaafari added.
