Coffee saves from death and extends life

Co-lead author of the study Neil Murphy, from the Inter Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France, said that while drinking patterns were very different from country to country, the team saw a consistent relationship.

The researchers said they made a "statistically significant" observation between those who consumed the most coffee and lower risk of death, compared to non-drinkers.

In the US study, African Americans, Japanese Americans, Latinos and whites who drank more than four cups of coffee a day showed an 18% lower risk of dying prematurely in the 16 years of follow-up, compared to non drinkers.

Meanwhile, American scientists conducted a separate investigation into the effect of coffee on the health of more than 185,000 participants from different ethnic backgrounds.

Drinking coffee also appeared to reduce the risk of death from specific causes, including digestive diseases, circulatory diseases and liver cancer.

The European-based analysis found that men that drank three or more cups of coffee each day presented an 18 percent lower risk of death. Americans who drank one cup of coffee per day were 12% less likely to die than those who chose to live java-free. "If you're not a coffee drinker, then you need to consider if you should start", said Dr Veronica Setiawan, associate professor of preventative medicine at USC.

In the "is coffee good for you" debate, science keeps backing up the side of the coffee lovers.

Regular coffee consumption has also been linked to other benefits. Interestingly, it also found both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee seem to provide the same health benefits.

The researchers looked at more than 520,000 people in 10 European countries and found that drinking more coffee could significantly lower a person's risk of mortality.

We're taking this as permission to pour a full-strength coffee nightcap. "If people enjoy their coffee they can relax and enjoy their coffee", he said, adding that people should not imagine that drinking extra coffee would militate against "other bad health behaviours".

Coffee is the world's favourite beverage, with an estimated 2.25 billion cups drunk globally each day.

According to two new studies, drinking more coffee could lead to a longer life. However, it must be kept in mind that the recommended amount of coffee consumption by an adult must not exceed 400mg in a day. In women, these chances were reduced by 8 percent for the same quantity. Scientists have found that people who drink coffee live a long life. One 350ml cup can reduce the risk by 12 percent while three cups reduces the risk by 18 percent. "Although it's premature to say, 'let's prescribe coffee for its health benefits, ' it's at least nice to know that there's increasing evidence that moderate coffee consumption can have a role, can be part of a healthy diet".

While you may just love coffee for the flavor and buzz, according to both studies, coffee drinkers actually face a lowered risk of death compared to non-coffee drinkers.
