China border row will be resolved peacefully, opposition told

India yesterday asserted that cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir was at the "heart" of the matter that was threatening regional peace and snubbed China for its offer to mediate to resolve the Kashmir issue, insisting it was a bilateral matter between it and Pakistan.

The opposition is likely to raise the two issues during Parliament's monsoon session that begins on Monday.

"The unique nature of very close and longstanding India - Bhutan relationship was recognised", it further said.

Giving assurance that parties will rise above politics, the importance of India and China to remain engaged through diplomacy was underlined in the meeting.

During a meeting with the opposition leaders on Friday, Singh said that the question of talks has not been ruled out.

Tensions between China and India over their long, disputed border are nothing new. Randeep Surjewala, the AICC media-in-charge said that the Congress party will "cooperate" with the government on issues relating to national security.

Apart from Jaishankar briefing the Opposition on Doklam row, the Home Secretary explained the gathering about the steps being taken by central government to tackle the volatile situation in Jammu & Kashmir. Rajiv Gauba, who will take over as Home Secretary on August 30, was also present.

"Asked serious questions. Why was government unprepared and if this was their failure?"

The MPs were briefed that 2.2 lakh pilgrims visited Amarnath previous year while so far 1.86 lakh have already visited the cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir. "The message reads: "@India - The Borderline is the bottom line!" said India Today.

Sources said the opposition was informed about the ground situation in Dokalam area and what the government meant to do to de-escalate the border tension.

The Congress had earlier raised concerns over the situation in Dokalam area where the armies of China and India are in a border standoff for a month now after Indian troops objected to road construction in the area. Everybody has promised to support the government.

The meeting was attended by top opposition leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress), Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M), Mulayam Singh Yadav (Samajwadi Party), Tariq Anwar (NCP), Sharad Yadav, KC Tyagi (JD-U) and Derek O'Brien (TMC). "Bhutan would prefer maintaining friendly and equidistant ties with both India and China", P. Stobdan, a former Indian ambassador and senior fellow at the New Delhi-based Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, told Sputnik.

The stand-off between India and China is a effect of the latter trying to disturb the status-quo at the India-China-Bhutan tri-junction in Doklam.
