Case of critically-ill baby back in court after Pope, Trump support

Parents of terminally ill baby Charlie Gard have 48 hours to present new evidence in their court case

Emotions ran high during the hearing with ITV News also reporting that the child's father yelled at a barrister representing Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), where his son is being treated, "when are you going to start telling the truth?"

The reopening of the case at London's High Court may allow Charlie to receive the therapy treatment at his current hospital or overseas.

On Friday, however, GOSH said it had applied for a new court hearing "in light of claims of new evidence relating to potential treatment for his condition".

The hospital requested a review of the justice after the publication of a letter from the Bambino Gesu Hospital in the Vatican, which presented its research and recommended that the Great Ormond Street Hospital "reconsider" its position.

The application came after both Pope Francis and President Donald Trump fuelled global attention to the case, with hospitals in Rome and the U.S. offering to provide Charlie the experimental therapy.

The brain damage Charlie has already suffered is irreversible, meaning even on the off-chance the experimental treatment extends his life, the little boy will remain blind, deaf, unable to breathe on his own and unable to move.

The judge asked the parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, to produce the evidence - about the effectiveness of the experimental treatment that could help their son - by Wednesday 2 p.m. local time (9 a.m. EDT).

It ruled the children's hospital could turn off his life support.

Maxwell Smith, who lives in the United Kingdom with his parents, was diagnosed with mitochondrial depletion when he was only several months old, but at the age of five, he is alive thanks to nucleoside bypass treatment.

"He is our son".

Despite the verdict being upheld by the European court of human rights, his parents have continued to fight, with the Pope and US President Donald Trump joining the fray to urge continuing treatment overseas. "Please listen to us", she said. This has triggered a debate over who knows best for a baby's health.

Francis responded: "I have to decide this case not on the basis of tweets, not on the basis of what might be said in the press, or to the press".

"There are now seven doctors supporting us from all over the world - from Italy, from America, from England as well", Yates said Sunday when she arrived at the hospital. "I will continue to do my job". -- This story has been corrected to show that the surname of the CEO of Americans United for Life is Foster, not Glenn.
