Ai Weiwei says Liu Xiaobo's case China's 'shame'

China Cremates Liu Xiaobo Says His Wife is ‘Free

China has pushed back against a wave of global censure over the death of democracy advocate Liu Xiaobo, telling the world to stay out of its "domestic affairs" and labelling the 2010 decision to award the late activist a Nobel peace prize "a blasphemy".

Liu was not able to attend the Nobel award ceremony in Oslo in 2010 as he was serving an 11-year prison sentence for allegedly "attempting to undermine political order".

Jerome Cohen, an expert in Chinese law and human rights from New York University, said Beijing's treatment of Liu and his wife revealed "the Orwellian China that is developing under president Xi Jinping".

The leader of the Norwegian Nobel committee on Thursday accused Beijing of bearing "a heavy responsibility" for Liu's death, while the British foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, said China's treatment of him was "wrong".

The leader of Taiwan, the Chinese-speaking world's only democratic country, pays respect to dissident and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who passed away yesterday.

The legal bureau in the northeastern city of Shenyang said on its website that Liu succumbed to multiple organ failure, three days after being taken into intensive care at the First Hospital of China Medical University.

Cruz recalled that Liu's name had been at the top of a list of signatories of Charter 08 - "a manifesto that shined a light on the Communist Party of China and its totalitarian abuse of power".

"Some news came out when Liu Xiaobo was still with us, that it was Liu Xia's wish to have his ashes scattered at sea", the friend said.

Lured by the prospect of doing business with the world's second largest economy and growing, many countries have toned down their criticism of Beijing's human rights violations, voicing their concerns behind closed doors if at all.

"As long as he had a body, they had to contain the impact of what he embodied", said David Kelly, a longtime friend of Liu and China watcher.

Close friends said they were anxious for her well-being, with reports that she had already lost both parents in the previous year and had suffered from depression and a heart condition. "The danger was extremely great", Liu Yunpeng said.

In 1996, the authorities granted him permission to marry Liu Xia, an artist and poet, whilst still in jail.

They confirmed that Liu Xia was by her husband's bedside when he died - and his last words were telling her to "live a good life".

Eide criticised the government for being far too passive in its stance over the treatment of Liu, who died on Thursday at the age of 61.

Decrying CensorshipPhoto Internet users mourning Mr. Liu posted images of an empty chair, a subtle tribute to his winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010.

Liu Xia, wife of the late Chinese pro-democracy activist Liu Xiaobo, listens to a question during an interview in Beijing June 24, 2009. The Chinese government reacted by briefly suspending trade with Norway. "She is at this moment the person who is suffering most", Hu said.

Ai said of his friend, "I think Liu Xiaobo will be remembered as an individual, a strong mind, with his belief, and as a fearless fighter, believing in democracy and freedom of speech".

"I mourn Liu Xiaobo, the courageous fighter for human rights and freedom of expression", German Chancellor Angel Merkel's spokesman tweeted on her behalf. "Instead, we talked more about things like books we love, such as the Japanese novelist Yasunari Kawabata", she said. Some critics warned that the treatment of Mr. Liu has marred China's global reputation and tarnished the legacy of President Xi Jinping, who has taken a hard line against dissidents.
