'You got no safe place': Portland stabbing suspect rants in court

Jeremy Joseph Christian who allegedly stabbed to death two men on a train

He says they must be traumatized from being targets of hate and from the deaths of two other men who also tried to intervene Friday. Dozens of people showed up to show solidarity with the victims, and they had to wait outside in the hall. Taliesin Namkai-Meche was 23 years old, a recent college graduate.

The teens, one of whom has identified herself to press as 16-year-old Destinee Mangum, were riding the light-rail train on Friday, May 26, when known white supremacist Jeremy Joseph Christian boarded their auto and began verbally abusing them because one was wearing a hijab. A third man who tried to step in was also stabbed but survived. Suddenly, she said, Christian hit the phone away and stabbed Namkai-Meche in the neck.

There were reportedly shouts from the hallway outside in response to Christian's appearance, and at another man donned in multicolored hair who came to the court to support Christian.

Christian did not enter a plea on May 30, but was assigned a public defender to handle his case. His court-appointed attorney, Gregory Scholl, did not immediately return a call for comment. And in court documents that were filed, a police detective says there is cellphone and surveillance video of the stabbings that took place on this light rail train in Portland. They reviewed Christian's Facebook page, and report that he advocated removing Mosques and promoted Whites-only regions of the Northwest.

This booking photo provided by Multnomah County Sheriff's Office shows Jeremy Joseph Christian. It wasn't clear if he said something to draw Christian's attention, but he stood up as Christian began shouting at him.

Micah Fletcher, was stabbed by Jeremy Christian, 35, a white supremacist last week.

Islamic groups have raised almost half-a-million dollars for the families of the men killed in Portland, Oregon while trying to defend Muslim women from a racist attack. A stranger intervened, telling Christian he couldn't disrespect the girls in such a way, she said.

An organizer has canceled an anti-Shariah law rally that had been planned June 10 in downtown Portland.

In a statement released Sunday, archbishop Rev. Alexander Sample said he was "shocked and deeply saddened" by the attacks. "That they are the real victims here as well", he said. In court on Tuesday, two police officers escorted Christian into the courtroom and from behind a panel of glass, the suspect bellowed, "Free speech or die Portland!" Both were planned on federal property.

The U.S. General Services Administration said Wednesday that the permit applicant followed all rules and regulations and there is no basis for revoking it.
