Wife: Man who shot congressman wanted to work on tax policy

The wife of the man accused of shooting at Republican Congressmen spoke out Thursday afternoon. The shooter was 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson.

Hours before the shooting, he posted to the Facebook group page "Terminate the Republican Party", calling the Republicans "thieving" and "cheating".

Investigators say they've checked Hodgkinson's laptop, cell phone, and a camera found in his van but have found no manifesto, no intent to commit violence, and nothing to indicate he was scouting potential targets.

"He would get politically aggressive". The YMCA said that Hodgkinson had canceled his membership on Tuesday, and said he was moving. Then he heard a scream from Scalise, who fell to the ground and dragged himself toward the outfield. She said she didn't know anything about him purchasing weapons.

Not mentioned: In 2002, according to police records, Hodgkinson became the foster father of a girl whom he allegedly abused. Staffer Zack BarthZack Barth, a legislative correspondent for Austin Congressman Roger Williams, was shot in the calf. They've also found a cell phone, a computer and camera in a white van that the Federal Bureau of Investigation says he was living in in Alexandria since March. And she said she had no idea what exactly he was doing while he was gone.

"The friend said Hodgkinson sold tools to get enough money for the trip", according to Kaiser. He always drank alone, and always drank cans of Budweiser - sometimes just one, sometimes as many as six, said Kristina Scrimshaw, a bartender at the restaurant.

"He said, 'I understand, ' and said he needed to take the gun to a range to shoot it, Watson said". But others in Belleville say it's just not a political town. He told her he was going to Washington DC to "change the tax brackets" and "work on taxes", she said.

She explained, her husband sold his southern IL home inspection business months ago.

He was a supporter of former Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders and is believed to have volunteered for his campaign.

Hodgkinson apparently wrote many letters to the editor of his local newspaper, the Belleville News-Democrat, which published almost two dozen of them between 2010 and 2012. Hodgkinson had been angry about income inequality and conservatism.

Hodgkinson was arrested for battery, domestic battery and discharging a firearm in April 2006.

While trying to drive away from that confrontation, the report said, Hodgkinson used a pocket knife to cut a seat belt.

The law enforcement source tells CNN that it's not clear it is an assassination list.

Sanders decried Hodgkinson's violent actions, saying he was "sickened" by the shooting. I went to school with him.

(St. Clair County Illinois Sheriff's Department via AP). Told they were GOP lawmakers, Hodgkinson walked back to his vehicle. Sarah Rankin in Richmond; Matt Barakat in Alexandria, Virginia; Don Babwin in Chicago; John O'Connor in Springfield, Illinois; Jim Suhr in Kansas City, Missouri; Jake Pearson in Washington and Associated Press Researcher Rhonda Shafner in NY also contributed to this report.
