White House spokesman Spicer draws heat off camera

The Daily Spicer: Let's shut out the cameras because anonymous sources

Spicer appeared to call on another reporter but Acosta cut in to ask a question.

"Maybe you should turn the cameras on, Sean?" Spicer has said the policy is created to thwart reporters who are trying "to become YouTube stars" by asking "some snarky question". Acosta, however, wasn't ready to let it go.

My question: Is any news organization willing to defy Spicer and just turn the cameras on? They're in the room.

Acosta and Spicer have had several on-air spats during White House briefings.

The Trump White House has taken to rarely holding on-camera press briefings, a move that many (including Acosta) see as an attack on press freedom. Can you tell us why you turned the cameras off?

Acosta last week raised objections to the restriction of cameras and recording equipment from briefings, and accused the White House of "stonewalling" and the "suppression of information".

Spicer had said at a briefing last Monday, 'There are days that I'll decide that the president's voice should be the one that speaks and iterate his priorities'.

'It's a legitimate question, ' Ryan said.

"We believe strongly that Americans should be able to watch and listen to senior government officials face questions from an independent news media", he wrote. "Can we address the cameras issue?" Television networks were allowed to record audio, but not air it live.

"Some days we'll have it - some days we won't", Spicer said, noting Trump would be speaking later alongside India's prime minister.

The White House Correspondents Association also has objected to the press restrictions. During Mr Trump's first press conference after winning the election, the CNN reporter was shouted down by the President-to-be, who said, "You are fake news"!

But other than advocating for more access, there isn't much the White House Correspondents' Association can do, Mason acknowledged.

It is debatable whether the press briefings are worth covering, given the limited answers and non-answers that Spicer and his principal deputy, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, have offered recently. "Look at the number of questions that get asked over and over again just so a reporter can get a clip of themselves saying something or yelling at someone". That makes it unlikely that the entire press corps would act as one in any protest, said a veteran White House reporter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to give a frank opinion. The White House said Trump wasn't answering questions.
