What happened in Bill Cosby's sexual-assault trial

Bill Cosby walks from the Montgomery County Courthouse during his sexual assault trial in Norristown Pa. Thursday

Prosecutors rested their case Friday after five days of testimony.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele has cited a 2015 ruling by a federal judge in Philadelphia to unseal excerpts of that testimony as an impetus for his office's decision to reopen the Constand investigation after a decade.

"I didn't know where she was going with her questions and I - from her tone - felt like I was being attacked", he said. It included a statement that Cosby first became attracted to Constand, then manager of Temple University's basketball team, in 2003. Constand has alleged that Cosby gave her drugs that left her unable to move or say no and then sexually assaulted her in his home in 2004.

"I'm thinking this is a dirty old man with a young girl", Cosby said, according to a decade-old deposition read to jurors on Friday by a police officer.

In the deposition, he recounted a telephone conversation he had with Constand's mother and the 79-year-old told detectives about apologizing to her.

In court, Bill Cosby stands by his word that he didn't tell Andrea Constand's mother, Gianna Constand, he had given her pills because he was "afraid" of the potential "financial consequence" and that he was being recorded. "The mother is coming at me for being a dirty old man". In the interview, Cosby admitted he gave Constand several pills, which he said were over-the-counter Benadryl. Mr Cosby maintains the pills were Benadryl; the defence has suggested they may have been something stronger.

"I found that to be odd", he said.

Cosby was asked in the deposition.

"He could have just said, 'No thank you, '" McMonagle said.

ON THE STAND: Psychologist Veronique Valliere testified that victims of celebrities often are afraid to come forward because of the possible backlash. Cosby refused to answer and said he'd send them in the mail. As People reports, she is also the owner of Pennsylvania's Valliere Associates Inc. She added that the use of "intoxicants" in sexual assaults seem to exacerbate these issues in victims.

"You have to label yourself as assaulted, but you also have to label the other person as an abuser, which is a hard leap, too", Valliere said.

Cosby's lawyers will present his side of the story before jurors get the case.

Bill Cosby's lawyers also reportedly tried to introduce evidence related to Andrea Constand's sexuality during the ongoing criminal trial.

Dr. Tim Rohrig, the director and chief toxicologist of Regional Forensic Science Center in Kansas, served as an expert witness in forensic toxicology, the study of the adverse effects of drugs on people. It is a central nervous system depressant. Defendant puts a new twist on an old argument: "that because Ms. Constand did not reveal this most personal detail about her life she must have been asking for defendant to drug and sexually assault her". The drug was created as a sleep aid, said Timothy Rohrig, and is still available with a prescription in some countries. According to Valliere, who was qualified as an expert in sexual assault, victim and offender dynamics and victim response to sexual assault, it is not unusual that a sexual assault victim would delay reporting, never report or continue contact with their abuser.

During the lunch break, Andrew Wyatt - a spokesman for Cosby - told reporters the comedian's wife hasn't appeared in court this week because he wants to keep her away from the "media circus".
