WannaCry Ransomware Attack Forces Shutdown Of Honda Plant

Honda is seen during the 87th International Motor Show at Palexpo in Geneva

The same WannaCry ransomware that attacked the NHS and other United Kingdom organisations brought Honda's Sayama plant to a standstill this week. The attack hit networks belonging to major corporations as well as hospitals and other organizations.

The ransomware, which locked down sensitive files and demanded cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) for their return, targeted unpatched devices running the Windows operating system.

"Of course keeping your systems up to date with the latest updates and patches [.] will help to keep you safe, but educating your staff on the dangers of using the very tools we need them to use for their daily workloads is just as important". That exploit was stolen by a group of hackers known as the Shadow Brokers and made public. What makes this especially frustrating for Honda is that it had previously taken precautions to prevent this very sort of thing back when WannaCry was making headlines in the middle of May. It is also a reminder that simple attacks such as phishing can build a foundation for a cyber catastrophy. The company strengthened its security after WannaCry first came on the scene in May, apparently to no avail.

However, what is the most interesting thing about the recent WannaCry ransomware attacks, is the fact that all the systems were infected by a virus which had exploited a flaw that was fixed two months ago. "Planning ahead is even more critical when business operations are at stake. Microsoft released patches in March to fix the vulnerability that has allowed WannaCry [pt] to spread, but many organisations have been particularly slow to implement them".

In fact, the Honda Company wasn't the only one that was forced to shut down its networks due to the WannaCry virus.

Hours after the original highly virulent WannaCrypt outbreak, security researcher Marcus Hutchins registered a domain found in the code that acted as a kill-switch and stopped the original ransomware spreading any further.
