Uber CEO Travis Kalanick Steps Down

Uber's board confirmed Kalanick's resignation early Wednesday, saying in a statement that Kalanick is taking time to heal from the death of his mother in a boating accident "while giving the company room to fully embrace this new chapter in Uber's history".

The move comes at a pivotal time for the largest ride-hailing company.

A former Uber engineer opened a floodgate of complaints after she detailed what she called #Sexual Harassment in the company which in turn spurred internal investigations.

Rather than battle the investors who wanted him out, Kalanick said in a statement he resigned so "Uber can go back to building rather than be distracted with another fight". Kalanick had been seen as the driving force behind Uber despite a series of embarrassing missteps. Fat chance. "Uber's embattled CEO, Travis Kalanick, is taking an indefinite leave of absence", read Vox's headline.

But under Kalanick, the company developed a reputation for ruthless tactics that have occasionally outraged government regulators, drivers, riders and employees.

RideAustin is working to avoid the same fate as Fare, a Phoenix-based ride-hailing company that shut down operations in Austin just a week after Uber and Lyft's return.

But "the significance of Uber has declined because the company has not managed to present itself in a stable and socially responsible way", Dudenhoeffer said.

An Uber representative registers people on his smartphone during the kick off of a citywide jobs tour in the Queens borough of New York July 21, 2015.

Drivers will also starting getting paid to wait for passengers and the cancelation window for passengers is being reduced to two minutes. The issue had been a longstanding source of disagreement between Uber and its drivers. It will continue to collect a portion of ride-cancellation fees, as well as the new waiting-time charges. By the end of April, Uber's share rose to 57.2 percent, but Lyft grew 2.2 percentage points to 11.7, according to data from the Taxi and Limousine Commission. The other features will roll out in August. The profanity-laced confrontation was caught on a video that surfaced in February. It was the result of a multi-week campaign led behind the scenes by Bill Gurley, another Benchmark partner who occupied the firm's board seat at Uber, with the goal of ousting Kalanick.

The letter obliquely references private findings from a company investigation into Uber's past, conducted by former United States attorney-general Eric Holder. He had become embroiled in a lawsuit brought against Uber by Alphabet's self-driving vehicle subsidiary Waymo alleging theft of trade secrets, just one of the difficulties Uber's next boss must deal with.

Said to be very passionate about the firm he co-founded, Kalanick was very accessible to even the most junior most employees and was always excited about new ideas.

Although, he refrained from mentioning Travis, he did mention that with everything that was happening in the company he felt upset and deeply reflective stating that when they created the app they were focused on an app that would make it easier to move around, and now seven years later were not prepared for the fast growth.

"This is a bold decision and a sign of his devotion and love for Uber", the board said. He tells the tech blog Recode that his approach to leadership is at odds with what he experienced at Uber.

May 30: Uber fires Levandowski. The company began searching for a chief operating officer.

June 12 - Emil Michael, Uber's senior vice president of business and a close confidant of Kalanick, leaves the company.

Kalanick is to stay on as a board member, Uber said. The report that was presented to the board contained details not in the public version. Travis Kalanick, under pressure from his top investors, announced his departure Tuesday night.
