Trump ignores question about Kushner back channel reports

President Trump says he has "total confidence" in son-in-law Jared Kushner after a series of reports revealed that the White House senior adviser tried to set up a secret communications channel with Russian Federation.

"Jared is doing a great job for the country", he said.

Just days after the Federal Bureau of Investigation began looking into Jared Kushner's interaction with Russian officials, President Trump has come out and said he has "total confidence" in his son-in-law and top political aide Jared Kushner. He is respected by everyone and is working on programs that will save our country billions of dollars. "In addition to that, and perhaps more importantly, he is a very good person".

On Kushner, a May 26 report by the Washington Post said Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak told his superiors in Moscow that Donald Trump's senior adviser discussed establishing a secret communications channel between the Trump transition team and the Kremlin.

Kushner's involvement in the proposed back channel was first reported by The Washington Post, which said he suggested using Russian diplomatic facilities for the discussions, apparently to make them more hard to monitor. Kushner reportedly had a key role in the Trump administration's recent dealings with Canada, Mexico, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and China, while the actual secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, quietly met with a number of foreign leaders during his travels overseas.

Following the reports, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) urged Trump to fire his son-in-law from his position as White House advisor.

While overseas, Trump's longtime lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, joined a still-forming legal team to help the president shoulder the intensifying investigations into alleged Russian interference in the election and his associates' potential involvement. He focused heavily on leaks - both those coming out of the White House and an intelligence leak blamed on Americans about the deadly bombing at a concert in Britain. The New York-based Kasowitz has always been the President's lawyer and is helping represent him on matters related to the inquiry into his campaign's alleged ties to Russian Federation.

The California Democrat says it's a serious allegation to have a key Trump campaign figure seeking secret communications with a country that intelligence experts say intervened in a US election.

Ivanka Trump will not be involved in the White House's internal, war room-like operation aimed at developing a rapid-response and communications strategy in an attempt to keep up with the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation, per the administration official.

The official said the two share a "healthy understanding that there's attention on you when you're at this level", adding that they are "unfazed" by the scrutiny of the past week. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster defended Kushner's attempt to create a back-channel with Russian Federation.

Rep. Adam Schiff described the reports as "very concerning". Senator Bob Corker, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, noted that Kushner has been willing to answer questions. And I think that [former FBI Director James] Comey we now know took action that he did in regards to then-candidate [Hillary] Clinton because of some false news that was being put out by the Russians.

"Russia, at least for my money, is our primary adversary", he told NBC. "They are in to do us in".
