Tigers place Victor Martinez on disabled list after irregular heartbeat

Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez lines a single to right field to drive in Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera during the game on Monday evening Comerica Park Detroit Michigan

"Oh yeah, I think it's a lot more frightening when you're talking about your heart than your ankle", Ausmus said.

"After suffering from a rapid heartbeat, dizziness and cold sweats" Martinez will be cautious for the next week to see if he will be healthy to play. Martinez first experienced the symptoms late in the game on Thursday against the Rays, and on Friday he underwent testing.

Ausmus planned to call Martinez after Sunday's game to check in before the Tigers left on the week-long road trip to Seattle and San Diego.

After reaching first base safety, Martinez appeared to ask to be removed from the game. I'm not sure the doctors even know what caused it or what has caused it.

According to a sports medical professional contacted by the Free Press, an irregular heartbeat is related to the electrical signals in the heart getting out of rhythm, between the upper and lower chambers. There are many reasons why this diagnosis could occur.

Martinez is hitting.261 with five home runs and 29 RBI this year primarily as the designated hitter. It hasn't been his best season up to this point, but the 38-year-old has remained relatively productive and is still a big presence in the Tigers' batting order. But that said, he was making it through.
