Theft of 10000 pounds of chocolate helps bring down 33 Russian mobsters

The FBI has arrested 33 members of a Russian crime syndicate who are being accused of mob-related offenses including hiring hit men to kill rivals and illegally selling tens of thousands of pounds of stolen chocolate

US prosecutors on June 7 arrested and charged more than two dozen alleged members of a Russian organized crime gang working out of New York City with what they called a "dizzying array of criminal schemes".

Theft of cargo shipments, including approximately 10,000 pounds of chocolate confections.

The FBI's Eurasian Organized Crime Task Force in NY arrested 25 of the men, the feds said, while seven remained at large. More than two dozen were arrested - most in the New York City area, though others were held in Nevada and Florida - with the remainder still at large.

The defendants are allegedly directly associated with the Shulaya Enterprise, an organized criminal group operating under the protection and direction of a "vor", or "thief-in-law".

"As a vor, Shulaya had substantial influence in the criminal underworld and offered assistance to and protection of the members and associates", the indictment said.

Most of the organization's members were born in the former Soviet Union and still have ties to Ukraine, Georgia, and the Russian Federation, NBC 4 said.

"Thanks to the remarkable interagency partnership of FBI, CBO, and NYPD, we have charged and arrested 33 defendants allegedly involved in this criminal enterprise", Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim said in a statement, calling the array of charges against the crime group "dizzying", USA Today reported.

'The indictments include charges against the alleged head of this national criminal enterprise, one of the first federal racketeering charges ever brought against a Russian "vor"'.

"It's nighttime in NY now".

FBI's Joint Eurasian Organized Crime Task Force arrested 27 members of the New York City-based Shulaya Enterprise accused of racketeering, wire and credit card fraud, narcotics trafficking, firearms and stolen property offenses, according to the criminal complaint that was unsealed yesterday. "But actually the kind of Russian gangster one sees in America is more likely to be a fraudster, a hacker or semi-criminal businessman".

The Justice Department said it had taken most of those charged into federal custody, but five were still at large.
