South Korea wants North Korea to host some 2018 Winter Olympics events

Taeyang

South Korea's newly appointed Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Do Jong Hwan made the suggestion during a visit to Pyeongchang on Tuesday, the JoongAng Ilbo reported yesterday.

South and North Korea are still formally at war, as no peace treaty was ever signed after the Korean War of 1950-1953.

The minister's remarks apparently reflect the hopes of the country's new liberal president, Moon Jae In, to engage the reclusive North through sports, a field in which its leader Kim Jong Un actively promotes exchanges with foreign countries.

Pyeongchang 2018 appear to open to the possibility, with the organisers now reviewing the plans.

"It will be discussed when the International Olympic Committee president arrives and I will take part in the discussion as an International Olympic Committee delegate", added Mr Jang, as he arrived in South Korea for a taekwondo conference. The 23 Winter Olympic Games run from 9 to 25 February, 2017.

The prospect was suggested by Gangwon Province Governor Choi Moon-soon that South Korea's bitter rival could host some of the snowboarding events in an effort to ease tensions.

"Sharing some Pyeongchang Olympics events with the North is simply out of question", he added. To put together a single team, negotiations must take place between the South Korean team, the International Ice Hockey Federation and the IOC. His parents, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, said their son received "awful torturous mistreatment" while in North Korea.

North Korean officials have reportedly declared the country's intent to take part in the Olympics after they boycotted the 1988 Summer Games in South Korea's capital Seoul.

Per the Guardian, no North Korean athletes have qualified for the 2018 Games yet.

The NHL failed to come to an agreement with the International Olympic Committee on sharing the revenue generated by hockey at the Olympics, as well as on the insurance for the league's players.

The BIGBANG member expressed his high expectations for the success of 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.

He insisted there are no contingency plans to move the Games should matters escalate further.
