Senate Democrats will pit Trump against 'mean' Republicans on Trumpcare

Obamacare in 2018 Many will pay the price

On Monday, Schumer and three other Democrats on the Senate committee on health, education, labor and pensions sent a letter addressed to Republican leaders demanding that they "schedule hearings to discuss, debate and hear testimony about the healthcare bill that you are now drafting in secret".

Senate Republicans are trying to get cut a deal among their own members, and are expected to bring the measure directly to the floor as early as next week - and avoid committee hearings and votes.

Progressive groups, abortion-rights advocates and labor unions are urging Senate Democrats to slow work to a crawl to prevent Majority Leader Mitch McConnell from passing a health-care bill before a weeklong July 4 recess.

Senate Republican Marco Rubio said he hoped there would be "plenty of time for debate and analysis" on such a crucial bill.

Senators, even those close to McConnell, say they haven't seen actual legislative text.

"They're talking about a whole new way of delivering health care" and people don't know the details, Stupak said of Republicans. The aides say leadership is leaning toward just a three-year phase out of the program, which is more generous than the House bill, but still less than the seven years that Portman and other Republicans in Medicaid expansion states have requested. Rep. Greg Walden of OR, who helped shepherd the party's health-care overhaul bill through the House last month, sat down with Louise Radnofsky, The Wall Street Journal's White House reporter, to offer his take on where the effort stands.

The bill also cuts federal subsidies that are provided to people looking to gain health care through the marketplaces that the Affordable Care Act created.

McConnell will need to win the votes of 50 of the 52 GOP senators to push the bill through the Senate.

"Republicans are drafting this bill in secret because they're ashamed of it, plain and simple", Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement. Retailers should highlight their individual efforts over the last decade to work in partnership with government and civic leaders to promote solutions to environmental and labor challenges at our nation's ports.

Senate Republicans are weighing a slower phase-out of Obamacare's Medicaid expansion, better protection for people with pre-existing conditions, and tax credits based on income as well as age.

A document provided to Kapur by a senior Democratic Senate aide acknowledges that the overall strategy for Senate Democrats is to keep delaying votes as a means to publicly force the Republicans to defend their "no hearings strategy". She voted against Republicans' Obamacare repeal bill in 2015.

"Our health-care system affects every single American and one-sixth of our economy", Schumer wrote.

Now, however, some Republicans fear the comment may actually come back to haunt them.

"It's an iterative process", Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) told Politico, adding that senators in the room are sending options to the Congressional Budget Office to try to figure out in general how much they would cost. They may well be considering more extended and more controversial extended action like holding up committee hearings on other issues or delaying confirmations.
