Ronaldo header gives Portugal 1-0 win over hosts Russia

Zoricich clears the ball during the All Whites match against Japan at the 2003 Confederations Cup

Mexico, winners of the tournament in 1999, now know a point in their final match against Russian Federation - who lost to Portugal earlier on Wednesday - will ensure they reach the semi-finals.

Another opportunity for the Real Madrid man was handed to him from Andre Gomes, whose surge to the byline ended in a clipped pass to his teammate, who sent his header wide. He made a confident grab just under the crossbar, though, to keep the All Whites (ironically dressed in all black uniforms) off the board. In the first game against the Russian national team, New Zealand predictably gave the initiative to Cherchesov's charges, and after spending most of the match in defense, lost with a score of 2: 0. The spark was Chris Wood striking at goal while Mexico defender Carlos Salcedo was down injured after his left shoulder was hurt in an off-the-ball tangle with the striker.

Mexico fans direct the chant in question at opposition goalkeepers as they take goal kicks and first came under the global spotlight in Brazil 2014, when Federation Internationale de Football Association investigated it at the 2014 World Cup. He was replaced by Hector Moreno.

Earlier, tensions erupted when Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio swore at the New Zealand coaching staff. They set up to contain Portugal and then break on the counter, but now had to try and get on the ball more in possession or risk falling further behind in this game.

Oribe Peralta completed Mexico's comeback in the 72nd minute, meeting Javier Quino's cutback and sweeping a shot past goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic.

The pressure paid off as Mexico restored parity.

Mexico took control of the game and Oribe Peralta grabbed the victor from close range after 72 minutes when he swept home another incisive cross from man of the match Aquino. It was Peralta who scored four times in the intercontinental playoff against New Zealand and helped bring El Tri to Brazil in 2014.

Thomas curled a magnificent late strike against the bar from the edge of the area in the closing stages with New Zealand's last major chance.

Making the Mexican cut for Wednesday's critical game were Alfredo Talavera (12), Nestor Araujo (2), and Raul Jimenez (9), who scored a sensational goal at the 54 minute of the game, among others.

As they pushed forward for an equaliser, they were almost caught out and were left indebted to defender Tommy Smith, who cleared a Mexico effort off the line.
