Queen's Speech axed to make way for complex Brexit talks

Theresa May did not get a mandate for a ‘hard Brexit

This does not mean that the Prime Minister will be unable to secure the critical vote on the watered-down speech next week: the DUP has made it clear that it would not support a Labour government while Jeremy Corbyn is leader of the opposition.

Extending the new session will allow MPs and peers to examine Brexit laws as well as domestic reforms in depth, according to the Government.

"Downing Street is a vacuum", the newspaper said.

May's own position has been called into question ever since her decision to call a snap election.

The Conservatives had delayed this year's Queen's speech as the party held discussions with the DUP to thrash out an agreement on propping up the minority government.

Conservative sources said talks with the DUP were "ongoing" after the Northern Irish party warned its support can not be "taken for granted".

The Queen's Speech, normally a chance for a new government to show off an ambitious programme, will reportedly be very pared down this time in order to avoid any potential splits in Conservative ranks.

The Queen's Speech was initially planned for Monday but had to be postponed due to the turmoil following the election.

May has said that Britain's vote to leave the European Union was in part a vote to reduce immigration.

In an apparent sign of recognition that she must seek a broad consensus for any Brexit deal, Mrs May said getting European Union withdrawal right will mean securing "a deal which delivers the result of last year's referendum and does so in a way that commands maximum public support".

"The election result was not the one I hoped for, but this government will respond with humility and resolve to the message the electorate sent".

It is seen as a critical test for the Government and failure to win the backing of a majority of MPs is seen as a vote of no confidence.

Yesterday, the government announced parliament will sit for two years, instead of the usual one, as it prepares for Brexit.

Theresa May still has to get the 2017 Queen's Speech out of the way before she needs to start worrying about the 2018 event. But First Secretary of State Damian Green acknowledged that it may not be possible to reach a deal in time for the Commons vote on the Queen's Speech package on June 29.

But she insisted there would be no going back on Brexit, pointing out that more than 80% of voters on June 8 backed parties promising to honour the referendum result.
