President Trump Signs VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act

White House: Trump to sign VA accountability bill on Friday

We thank President Trump for signing this bill and Senator Marco Rubio for boldly championing it.

"What happened was a national disgrace and yet some of the employees involved in these scandals remained on the payrolls", Trump said.

"In just a short time, we've already achieved transformative change at the VA - and believe me, we're just getting started", Trump said.

Today the president signed into law my bill, the VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act.

"As you all know all too well, for many years the government failed to keep its promises to our veterans". This is a bipartisan bill that will give the VA secretary the power to fire bad employees, and also protect whistleblowers who come forward.

The measure makes it easier to fire workers for misconduct and provides additional protections for whistleblowers.

The measure was prompted by a 2014 scandal at the Phoenix VA medical center, where some veterans died while waiting for care.

VA Secretary David Shulkin said during a May White House visit that the VA was "forced to take back an employee after they were convicted no more than three times for DWI and had served a 60 day jail sentence". It passed the Senate by a unanimous voice vote.

Concerned Veterans for America launched a massive grassroots effort to garner support for this bill, holding events across the country, making hundreds of thousands of phone calls to Congressional offices and launching online ads targeting all lawmakers to support it. Critics say few employees are fired for malfeasance.

President Donald Trump (2nd L), first lady Melania Trump (L), and Vice President Mike Pence (R) applaud during a Congressional Picnic on the South Lawn of the White House Thursday in Washington, DC.

"In the three years since committee oversight revealed that veterans at VA were dying while waiting for care, we have heard far too many instances of employees who don't live up to the standards expected of those who serve America's veterans but can not be fired for wrongdoing".
