Pelosi tries to reassure Dems after Georgia loss

The loss in Georgia followed similar disappointments in special House elections in Kansas and Montana, as well as in South Carolina Tuesday night.

While many liberal activists want the party to tack to the left, energize the base, and appeal to voters who supported Sen.

But prescriptions for how the Democrats should move forward varied.

Still others argue the Democrats' recent losses do not signal the need for a dramatic party shift.

"Democrats from coast to coast threw everything they had at this race, and Karen would not be defeated", House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement.

Democrats have had four opportunities to pick up seats in the U.S. House of Representatives since Donald Trump became president, and haven't been able to capitalize on any of them.

"I don't think people in the Beltway are realizing just how toxic the Democratic Party brand is in so many parts of the country", Ryan told Don Lemon on "CNN Tonight".

Rep. Seth Moulton, a prominent freshman Democrat from MA, agreed. "Time to stop rehashing 2016 and talk about the future".

"We're not focusing on the economic messages". The best thing to do in the short term may have been to encourage Ossoff's run while not completely abandoning him, and to share some of the attention heaped upon him with Archie Parnell, the Democrat who came even closer to winning Tuesday night in the special election for White House budget director Mick Mulvaney's former seat in South Carolina's 5th District.

The Twitter-verse isn't generally a friendly place, but the barrage of tweets following Republican Karen Handel's Tuesday victory in the much-watched Georgia congressional race were especially untoward - with much of the heat directed at conservatives.

"Our districts here that are in play are way more competitive than the Georgia 6th", Thowfeek said.

"This is the beginning of something much bigger than us", Ossoff said in his concession speech. "They have to really think about 2018, and what districts to compete in and what candidates they need".

Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California says in a letter to colleagues Wednesday that when President Donald Trump nominated House members to serve in his administration, he chose them from Republican districts the party knew it could win.

Vote in our informal, unscientific poll and tell us how you voted in the comments.

"I think you'd have to be an idiot to think we could win the House with Pelosi at the top", Rep. Filemon Vela of Texas, who supported Pelosi's bid to keep her leadership seat previous year, told Politico.

She touts supply side economics, going so far as to say during one debate that she does "not support a living wage" - her way of explaining her opposition to a minimum-wage increase. It's time for new leadership.

Massachusetts Democrat Congressman Seth Moulton tweeted that the result "better be a wake-up call for Democrats - business as usual isn't working".

"What will more than US$30 million (S$42 million) get you?" After four special elections nationwide, Democrats still haven't won any seats. "I certainly don't feel it".
