Pelosi defends leadership following special election loss

Russians destroyed and removed material from shuttered compounds, officials say

Front page of Silicon Valley's paper, The Mercury News of San Jose, "THE PELOSI PROBLEM: Some fault minority leader for losses", by Casey Tolan: "Some of the toughest ads against the 30-year-old [Georgia Dem candidate Jon] Ossoff were those tying him to Pelosi, whose approval ratings are underwater outside California". Pelosi has helped engineer budget deals, an overhaul of the nation's health care law and an economic stimulus during her years as a leader.

Pelosi said that would be fine with her.

But it's her fundraising skills that are regarded as a key political asset.

Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Sen.

She was elected to Congress in a special 1987 election. Plus, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich told Fox on Thursday that he also hopes that the Democrats keep Pelosi because the Republicans already know how to win elections against a Pelosi-run party. And some of her colleagues have voiced support for her since Tuesday, including Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota, who described her as "one of the best speakers ever".

When President Trump, for example, announced US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord - a voluntary agreement that promised only to reduce the average global temperature by just 0.05°C by 2100 - Pelosi accused the president of "dishonoring" God and questioned whether his grandchildren will even be able to breathe air.

"I respect any opinion that my members have but my decision about how long I stay is not up to them". She has beat back all comers, including last fall, when Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan of OH ran against her. Ryan fell well short but garnered dozens of votes, enough to underscore dissatisfaction with Pelosi and with her aging leadership team that has left promising young Democrats with few places to rise. The money numbers suggest why: In the 2016 election, Ryan's Penguin PAC donated just $13,000 to other Democrats.

On Morning Joe Thursday, Rep. Kathleen Rice, D-N.Y., made a plea for Pelosi's ouster. "She is a great leader".

Pelosi also incorrectly predicted that Democrats were poised to take back the House previous year, leading some of her colleagues to feel that this time around, she needs to deliver.

Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., who also attended the meeting, said, "in every corner of our caucus, we're concerned". Many are calling for new leadership.

"This is certainly something that we have to discuss because it's clear that, I think, across the board in the Democratic Party we need new leadership". Attack ads during the election joked that Pelosi and Ossoff were running mates due to their allegedly deep-rooted ties.

Democrat Jon Ossoff lost to Republican Karen Handel in a race many Democrats viewed as an opportunity to flip a long-held Republican congressional seat.

Pelosi faces criticism and a new rival, Stephen Jaffe, in her next primary election.

"I think you'd have to be an idiot to think we could win the House with Pelosi at the top", said Rep. Filemon Vela, D-Texas, who supported Pelosi in her last leadership race, Politico reported. Analysts say the legislation's unpopularity was a factor in Democrats losing control of the House in the 2010 election.
