Officials prepare for protests against Sharia law

Rick Ellis yells at Muslim attendees of Muslim Capitol Day in Austin, Tex., in January.

ZAMORA: I wasn't even familiar with anything about Sharia law.

The Raleigh ACT march is one of more than two dozen scheduled across the country.

Tomorrow, a group of people organized by Act for America are marching in protest of Sharia law and its effect on the United States. ("I am rubber, you are glue") But there is a human rights issue at stake here, and it's worth noting.

Oath Keepers also informs its members that rally organizers ask that attendees not wear brown shirts, "to help avoid giving the leftist media an easy way to attack us all as somehow being fascists just because of the color of our clothing". Roper promoted the marches on his podcast, where he said Muslims "are not welcome in our nation and, of course, endgame, on our planet".

Organizers plan to march to City Hall plaza and confront the anti-Sharia demonstrators.

Event organizers are encouraging attendees to come wearing white, Hopps said, and to bring sponges, mops, brooms and trash bags, symbolizing the gathering's attempt to scrub their state clean of Islamophobia. By protesting Sharia, they protest the human rights it espouses.

March organizer Stephanie Rowe said she disagrees with practices she believes the Quran teaches - honor killings, domestic violence, child brides, torturing of homosexuals and female genital mutilation.

As United Methodist pastors, we are devoted to a close and faithful reading of Christian scripture, which clearly and frequently reminds us that we are called to welcome immigrants into our midst, and as such must reject the statement about "the rise of Islamic immigration". Rather than monolithic and rigid, the Muslim world is vast and diverse, with different interpretations of the obligations imposed by Sharia upon the observant.

Brass City police say they have met with leaders from both groups and are prepared for the events today.

Yet rights groups and watchdogs, among them the SPLC and the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), have criticised the marches as Islamophobic. We have people who still want to have their own rallies across the country. "We saw that in Portland and we think that's incredibly problematic", said Benton Strong, a spokesperson for Seattle Mayor Ed Murray.

"These rallies are occurring during the Muslim holy month of Ramada, and seek to vilify Muslims and strike far in the hearts of Americans that Shariah Law is coming to the USA at a time of heightened anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant sentiment in the United States", said Iman Jodeh, a spokesperson for the Colorado Muslim Society.

"This is an attempt to make Muslims seem like these insidious, creepy beings whose only role here is to come and steal constitutional rights", says Beirich.

Two other groups in Syracuse have announced counter rallies. Gabriel and her organization did not respond to requests for comment. "She also says every practicing Muslim is a radical Muslim".

"What is wrong with a country that spreads fear and hatred when someone wants to defend what it stands for?" she said. So the only situation where you wouldn't do that would be in a situation where you are prohibited from doing mandatory things under Islam.

"ACT for America has never, and will never, tolerate any bias, discrimination, or violence against anyone, based on their religion, gender, race, or political persuasion", its website reads. But Gabriel- who claims to have met with President Trump in the White House- doesn't care.

Two cities in MI are set to play host to "March Against Sharia" protests Saturday as part of a series of national events, sparking criticism and counterprotests from members of the Muslim community and supporters.
