North Korea tests another rocket engine

Trump's Faint Praise For China's Xi Jinping

North Korea has carried out five nuclear tests and dozens of missile tests as it seeks to develop a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting the US.

North Korea has carried out another test of a rocket engine that the United States believes could be part of its programme to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile, a USA official says.

According to the official, North Korea conducted a static rocket engine test at its Sohae launch facility. "I think that the weapon systems that the Agency for Defense Development is working on are means not of destruction and slaughter but rather of dialogue and peace", Moon was also quoted as saying by Park.

His death outraged the United States and worsened already-poor relations with North Korea.

However, North Korea slammed the latest United Nations sanctions as "mean" and vowed to press ahead with its missile and nuclear weapons programs.

South Korean officials did not have details about the reported test and declined to comment on the possible nature of the engine. But a United States official conceded to Fox News that although spy satellites have spotted increased activity around the test site, "nobody knows what that means".

Moon has expressed a desire to use the February 9-25 Pyeongchang Olympics to reach out to North Korea, with relations between the two at their lowest point in decades.

South Korea's military plans to deploy the Hyunmoo-2, which is created to hit targets as far as 800 kilometers (500 miles) away, after conducting two more test launches.

But South Korea's desire to improve its weapons gained urgency as the North made gains in its missile programs.

"When the world says that it hopes China can do even more, I don't know what "do even more" refers to", Geng told a daily news briefing in Beijing on Friday.

"For instance, if the American side completely stopped large-scale military exercises, temporarily or permanently, then let us talk about how to solve the Korean issue peacefully", he said.

Asked if the North planned to launch such a missile, Mr Kye said: "The US is continuously threatening".

Just two days earlier, Trump had condemned the "brutality of the North Korean regime" after the death of Otto Warmbier, an American student who was detained in North Korea for almost a year and a half.

South Korea can load warheads weighing up to 2 tons on ballistic missiles with shorter ranges.

In early June, the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposed new sanctions on North Korea and entities trading with it over its ongoing development of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and continued violations of UN Security Council resolutions.
