More UK buildings fail fire-safety tests

Multi-agency group discusses Staffordshire high-rise buildings after Grenfell Tower Fire

The revelation comes as more than 3,000 residents of the Chalcots Estate in Camden, north London, are facing weeks in temporary accommodation after four tower blocks were evacuated.

Communities secretary Sajiv Javid said it was very important for local authorities and housing associations to continue to submit such samples as a matter of urgency in the light of the results.

Added to the cladding, the London Fire Brigade "also identified concerns relating to services that have been run through compartment walls leading to possible breaches in the buildings ability to stop fire spreading", Dan Daly, assistant commissioner for fire safety, said in a statement after the evacuation.

Almost two weeks after a major fire destroyed a 24-storey block of flats in west London, the repercussions of what happened to the Grenfell Tower continue to be felt across the United Kingdom, and much farther afield.

More than 100 high-rise housing blocks in Wandsworth are to be fitted with sprinkler systems in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster it was announced on Friday (23 June).

Some 600 buildings are being tested, showing how widely combustible cladding may have been used across Britain.

Patrols of the buildings are also being carried out "as a precautionary safety measure".

Residents trooped out of the buildings Friday night with suitcases and plastic bags stuffed with clothes as council workers in high-visibility security vests guided them to a local community center where some spent the night on inflatable beds.

"Several people who where in the hallways, stairwells and common parts of the block were told to evacuate whereas those who where in their flats and smoke or heat was not affecting them were told to stay in their flat".

The type of siding or "cladding" used on the Grenfell Tower in London - and suspected of feeding the massive fire that killed dozens of residents - is not allowed on the exterior of tall buildings across most of the U.S.

The tower blocks are among 600 buildings across the country being tested for potentially unsafe cladding, or siding, in light of the blaze that left the apartment block a charred shell. "But I don't know nothing, no one's really told us what's going on", one resident said.

Up to 14,000 people across the country are facing evacuation from their homes after tower blocks failed fire safety tests.

One tower block resident in West Dunbartonshire said he welcomed news that building standards and conditions would be subject to further scrutiny. The UK government may have to pay £600m to protect other tower blocks from fires.

The Department for Communities and Local Government has put in place a "combustibility testing programme" for aluminium composite material.

"It was perfectly safe before, despite what they are saying now - I believe I am safe in there". The blaze claimed the lives of at least 79 people, although the death toll is still expected to rise.
