JK lynching: Cops form SIT, arrest five of 12 identified

Meanwhile, police has asked the SP North Sajad Khalid Bhat to report to the Police Headquarter till further orders and placed Additional SP Traffic Srinagar, Sajad Shah in his place.

The killing took place between 11.30 p.m. and midnight.

The advisory came a day after a DySP rank officer Mohammad Ayub Pandith was brutally lynched outside Jamia Masjid.

"In Srinagar, the personnel have been asked to offer Eid prayers at DPL Srinagar (District Police Lines) or the Police Control Room", the newspaper quoted a senior police officer saying.

DGP said that such attacks are aimed at "demoralizing" the police. A senior police official told media that police have identified 12 persons in this connection and five of them have been arrested.

Sources said that two arrested out of the five are injured youths who were hit by bullets when slain police officer opened fire.




"It is the resolve of Jammu and Kashmir Police that we are not going to spare these rascals", he said, adding that investigation into the case was underway and everything would be clear once the report comes. As per eyewitness accounts, the officer was paraded naked and then stoned to death while other just watched, some even eating chicken while it happened, the New York Times reported.

The state's Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti praised the police force for their "restraint" in the face of recent pressures, adding, "The day they run out of patience it will be a hard situation".

Inspector General of Police (Kashmir range) Muneer Ahmed Khan has issued an advisory, asking policemen to stay away from places of worship which are not secured. "They killed someone who was on duty to protect them".

An angry mob beat a police officer to death outside a mosque in Indian-administered Kashmir, police said Friday, as tensions ran high in the volatile Himalayan region.

The incident also drew condemnation from the BJP, which is a part of the ruling alliance. The IGP said that the culprits will be brought to justice.
