G7 Italy summit ends without USA pledge on Paris climate pact

President Donald Trump has said Washington will not be bound by the targets on reducing emissions of greenhouse gases set down in Paris and will cut funding for developing countries affected by climate change

Galletti and Scott Pruitt, Administrator of the US Environment Protection Agency, held a pre-summit meeting on Friday in which they agreed on the need to reduce food waste, which also has environmental implications.

OTTAWA-The Prime Minister's Office is disputing a report in a German magazine that described Justin Trudeau's concern about "provoking" the United States for withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement.

Environment Minister Catherine McKenna says Canada has no interest in renegotiating the Paris climate change agreement in order to bring the United States back on board.

A communiqué released Monday included a statement that the environment ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and European commissioners responsible for climate "reaffirm strong commitment to the swift and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement".

Trudeau issued a statement after U.S. President Donald Trump announced the United States' withdrawal from the worldwide climate agreement earlier this month, saying he was "deeply disappointed" in the decision and that Canada's commitment to fight climate change is "unwavering".

Important players in USA industry and individual cities and states are already implementing changes aimed at meeting the targets laid down in Paris, where most of the world's countries agreed to try to cap global temperature rises at 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Already through the first day of works, however, it was quite clear the rift on climate between the USA and their major allies was much likely to remain unchanged. "We welcome the continued support that the Paris Agreement has received from other countries, and subnational and non-state actors around the world".

"We will meet the Paris standards, I believe, in the United States", he told a news conference.

Germany and California agreed Saturday to work together to keep the Paris accords on track and the most populous U.S. state had its own representative at the Bologna talks.

Quite a number of states and municipalities have started to stand up against President Trump, on his decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. Yamamoto told Pruitt he wants to work with the USA within the Paris framework.

Countries that are challenging USA leadership in the world, such as Russian Federation and China, have already reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris Climate Accord, and China is criticizing the US for leaving.

May told Trump at the time that the climate accord was a safety net for future generations. "At this point, if you know the U.S.is going to abstain from everything, then you want as big a possible a group of leaders or countries to sort of isolate the United States on this".

California is a member of the 'Under 2 Coalition, ' a group of 175 states and cities that aim to help keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius, a threshold scientists say is necessary to prevent catastrophic climate change.
