Four US soldiers killed in apparent insider attack in Afghanistan

The US military command in Kabul confirms it was 'aware of an incident' at Camp Shaheen

The Afghan military statement said that the rogue soldier had also been killed.

Al Jazeera's Rob McBride, reporting from Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, said North Atlantic Treaty Organisation soldiers were training their Afghan counterparts at the base where the attack took place.

An apparent insider attack in northern Afghanistan on Saturday left some USA troops wounded, US and Afghan officials said.

"The incident is now under investigation", the statement read.

Camp Shaheen is home to the Afghans 209th Corps and was the site of a complex Taliban attack in April that killed more than 130 Afghan soldiers.

Officials at the northern base tell Jennifer Glasse, who reported from Kabul for our Newscast unit, that the shooter was killed.

NATO's Resolute Support later tweeted that seven USA servicemembers were wounded and evacuated for treatment.

A spokesman for the USA military command in Kabul denied earlier comments by an Afghan official that Americans had been killed, but confirmed that an unspecified number of soldiers had been wounded at Camp Shaheen, the headquarters of the Afghan army's 209th Corps in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif.

There has been a series of attacks lately which targeted the U.S. army based in Afghanistan, Earlier this week, a convoy carrying USA and Afghan forces was struck by a roadside bomb and came under small arms fire.

He said the attacker was shot dead. US soldiers have been wound. Six U.S. troops have been killed from hostile fire in Afghanistan in 2017.

In a statement, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said an Afghan commando loyal to the militant group had opened fire on foreign "invaders", killing four and wounding four others.

It comes as Washington is expected to announce an increase in United States troops deployed to the country as Afghan forces struggle to rein in the Taliban who are ramping up their offensive against the Western-backed government. Richard Flynn, of Starke, Fla., of Tactical Command Post, HQ Company, 2-502 Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, take up a fighting position behind a barrier, during a joint patrol with the Afghan Army, in Zhari district, Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan.
