According to CBS News, the couple lawyered up for an investigation stemming from a January 2016 complaint regarding Jane Sanders's time as Burlington College president.

Sanders spokesperson Josh Miller-Lewis told ABC News, "We're at a pivotal moment in the fight to save health care and the goal this weekend is to elevate that fight". Sanders' office had exerted "improper pressure" on People's United Bank to approve a $6.7 million, tax-exempt loan for the college. In 2011, Sanders stepped down from her position as president.

Fox and Friends host Abby Huntsman on Sunday reported the story, explaining, "Bernie Sanders and his wife scrambling to lawyer up". One of the tenets of the loans was that Burlington had to provide evidence of at least $2 million in donations as collateral.

Sanders later said that Obamacare had problems with deductibles and co-payments being too high, and he repeated his wish for the U.S.to move toward a single-payer, "Medicare-for-all" program.

Bernie Sanders says the investigation is a political move created to hurt him.

A complaint was filed to the US attorney in Vermont by Brady Toensing in 2016.

The numbers that donors say they pledged compared to what Sanders documented differ, according the report. Sanders used his influence to lobby for the loan is a "political charge" that is "baseless" and "false". Bernie Sanders says Toensing "has gone after a number of Democrats and progressives" in Vermont. "It has everything to do with an enormous transfer of wealth from working people to the richest Americans", Sanders said. "I think the American people in many cases are seeing themselves working longer hours for lower wages, they're anxious about their kids not being able to go to college, they're anxious about what's going to happen to them when they're retiring". "They were trying to get clarification on what the accusations are because they had not been contacted by anybody as to an investigation", said Coralee Holm, the former dean of operations and advancement for Burlington College, VTDigger reported.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump aren't the only 2016 presidential candidates who understand the scrutiny of being under an FBI investigation.

Throughout the 2016 campaign and Trump's time in office, Sanders, a former contender for the Democratic presidential nomination, has pressured the president to keep his promise to protect Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.
