Federal Bureau of Investigation interviews employees of Russian software firm raising security concerns in US

Computer code

However a defence spending policy bill passed by the Senate Armed Services Committee, prohibits the US Defence Department from using Kaspersky software platforms because the company "might be vulnerable to Russian government influence".

Current and former USA officials worry that state-sponsored hackers could try to exploit Kaspersky Lab's anti-virus software to steal and manipulate users' files, read private emails or attack critical infrastructure in the United States - and they point to Kaspersky Lab executives with previous ties to Russian intelligence and military agencies. The company's products are widely used, including in private residences, commercial enterprises and government facilities.

There doesn't appear to be hard evidence of a link, but there are worries that the U.S. isn't adequately vetting access agreements between Kaspersky and the third-party vendors that provide its tools to the American government.

On Tuesday (27 June), it was revealed the Federal Bureau of Investigation had visited Kaspersky employees in multiple cities.

She reportedly added that there was a consensus in Congress and Trump officials who believe Kaspersky "cannot be trusted to protect critical infrastructure, particularly computer systems vital to our nation's security", Shaheen is quoted as saying.

Reuters said no warrants were served and the security firm later confirmed its staffers had a number of "due diligence" conversations with agents.

The firm's founder and chief executive, Eugene Kaspersky, said that, if asked, he would provide USA authorities with software "source code for checking".

The company has repeatedly insisted it poses no threat to USA customers and would never allow itself to be used as a tool of the Russian government.

"During the last 10 years, Kaspersky Lab has discovered and publicly reported on multiple Russian-speaking cyber-espionage campaigns, which is more than any other US-based company".

The company said it has not been notified of an official investigation. The company has a 20-year history in the IT security industry of always abiding by the highest ethical business practices, and Kaspersky Lab believes it is completely unacceptable that the company is being unjustly accused without any hard evidence to back up these false allegations. It is Kaspersky Lab, not Kasperky Lab.
