FDA to delay rule requiring new nutrition facts panel

Final rules were published by the

Vitamin D and potassium will be required on the label, along with calcium, and iron but vitamins A and C will no longer be required.

Changes to the new nutritional food label include the calorie count and serving size shown more prominently and more detail about added sugar and updated recommended daily intake values.

The delay is the latest reversal of the Obama administration's nutrition reforms under Trump.

In a letter sent earlier this year to Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and other food industry groups had asked for an extension to 2021, the AP noted.

The labels, championed by former first lady Michelle Obama, were supposed to add a special line for "added sugars" and emphasize calorie content in large, bold text.

The Food and Drug Administration said it has determined that manufactures need additional time beyond the July 26, 2018 compliance date to complete and print new labels for their products.

But there may be another wrinkle here: As in the case of the menu-labeling delay, some companies have already adapted to the new rules - and they may be hurt if their competitors get more time to make the change.

The FDA said it would provide details on the extension at a later date.

"If some food labels change and others do not, it will make it more hard for consumers to compare foods and make a healthier choice", said Stein, who's a nutrition support dietitian at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, N.Y.

"Food and beverage manufacturers are committed to giving consumers the information and tools they need to make informed choices, such as by updating the Nutrition Facts Panel", Pamela Bailey, the president and CEO of the Grocery Manufacturers Association, said in a statement.

Industry groups welcomed the delay, calling it a common-sense decision to reduce consumer confusion and cost.

"The ability of the Trump administration to repeat its mistakes is breathtaking", said Jim O'Hara, the director of health promotion policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest. And the Agriculture Department has delayed animal welfare standards for organic foods and sodium standards for federally subsidized school lunches.

"There's just been a lot of pressure to extend the deadline", Figel said.

"But the fast-approaching compliance deadline was virtually impossible to meet without the needed final guidance documents from FDA".

"As a result, the FDA intends to extend the compliance dates to provide the additional time for implementation".
