China, India are driving energy demand growth

Coal has been a target of countries and companies alike as the world begins to work toward the goals of the Paris climate agreement

US demand for coal fell by 33.4 million tons of oil equivalent past year to 358.4 million, the biggest decline in the world in absolute terms, BP data show.

More than half of growth in renewable power came from wind, which increased by 16% past year, while solar energy represented around a third of the overall expansion in renewable power.

Here's another sudden shift that shows how China's maturing economy is changing the energy industry. "There is an aim to move away from coal consumption towards cleaner energy sources". Stronger government limits on carbon emissions in many countries, as well as air and water pollution rules, are also fueling the broader shift away from coal.

In Asia, China's decline was partially offset by higher consumption in India and Indonesia, where the fuel is still so cheap and readily available that utilities prefer it over natural gas for electricity generation. More than half that growth came for new wind turbines. Money is pouring in to cleaner energy, while coal is discouraged in the fight to improve the air quality in some of the most polluted cities in the world.

The year 2016 was a year of adjustment for the oil market, with oil demand again increasing robustly and production growing by less than a quarter (0.4 Mb/d) of that seen in 2015, according to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy. In contrast, use of coal - the most carbon-intensive of the fossil fuels - fell steeply for a second year, down by 1.7%, primarily due to falling demand from both the U.S. and China. China is vowing to invest $361 billion in renewables by 2020, yet the Trump administration is doubling down on fossil fuel production, all while criticizing China for not doing enough to control its emissions. China led the way with a 7.9 percent decline in coal production (140 mtoe), followed by the US with a 19 percent drop (85 mtoe). The nation's installed solar capacity rose 79 percent to 78 gigawatts previous year and wind expanded 15 percent to 149 gigawatts.

This transition from coal coincides with renewables being the fastest growing energy source a year ago, now providing a share of just under 4% of primary energy worldwide. However, experts expect it to bounce back slightly as the wealth created in China will result in people driving their cars further and relying on planes and therefore jet fuel.

Global coal consumption fell by 53 million tonnes of oil equivalent (mtoe), or 1.7 per cent. Australia was part of this decline, albeit at a minor scale compared with other countries.

Oil production grew in Russian Federation for the eighth year in a row with the new post-Soviet record of 11.2 million barrels per day established in 2016, the statistical data showed.
