Australia to resume airstrikes in Syria

Russia's deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said it was a "continuation of America's line to disregard the norms of global law". Moscow has accused the U.S. of not using the hotline to prevent the Raqqa incident.

The U.S. -led worldwide coalition said Sunday, according to CNN, that it will remain focused to fighting the Islamic State, but will defend itself.

The move comes days after a US fighter jet shot down a Syrian jet, and Syrian ally Russian Federation responded by threatening to treat planes from a USA -led coalition operating in the skies over Syria as targets.

Hostility towards coalition and partner forces "conducting legitimate counter-ISIS operations will not be tolerated", the coalition said.

A U.S. military official told AFP the drone was "on a run toward our folks to drop a munition on them" and was shot down in self-defence.

The U.S. military has repeatedly warned forces fighting on Assad's side to stay away from a "deconfliction zone", agreed with Russian Federation, near a garrison used by U.S. Special Forces and U.S. -backed militia around Al-Tanf, near the border with Jordan.

The last drone the U.S. says it shot down was also reportedly destroyed near Tanf after firing on coalition forces.

Iranian-backed pro-Syrian regime forces are pushing forward on a number of fronts, and the U.S. is equally eager to resist what it sees as a widening of Iranian influence. The confrontation was the latest clash in Syria where a proxy war is going on between Iranian-backed militias that support Assad and the Syrian fighters who have been trained by the U.S., British, and other coalition military advisers, the New York Times reported.

The SU-22 incident took place on Sunday afternoon near the town of Tabqa, where the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been fighting Islamic State militants as part of a drive to retake the city of Raqqa, the IS stronghold further to the east.

After announcing a temporary halt of all air operations in Syria earlier this week, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) will resume its right to undertake airborne missions, the Department of Defence announced Thursday.

It said that Turkish and Israeli military "were informed in a timely manner of the missile launches through communication channels", but it did not mention the United States.

Russia's defence minister said the pilot ejected "above IS-controlled territories" and that his fate was unknown.

The coalition also issued a warning to the pro-regime forces.

The SDF is now trying to enact a siege of the city by taking the southern bank.

In September 2016, US-led coalition planes targeting IS positions instead killed Syrian troops.

On June 9, despite the series of engagements with United States forces at Al-Tanaf, the regime skirted around the base to arrive at the Iraqi border for the first time since 2015.

But the coalition said the move was defensive.

Despite the increasing number of incidents, analysts say neither Syria's regime nor Washington now wants a major confrontation.

Unfortunately, the situation in Syria is extremely complex, and we are already involved.
