Aus vs New Zealand: Match abandoned due to rain, teams share points

India is playing Pakistan in their first ICC Champions Trophy 2017 match

Australia and New Zealand will look up to their inspirational skippers Steve Smith and Kane Williamson to straightaway set the tone when they lock horns in the ICC Champions Trophy here today.

England, who won their Group A opener against Bangladesh, will now face both sides in the coming days from a position of strength.

The Blackcaps will consider themselves a little unlucky as they seemed to have the upper hand with Australia - chasing a revised target of 235 in 33 overs - reduced to 53/3 in nine overs.

Having taken 62 balls to reach his fifty, Williamson kicked on and took just another 34 to bring up his ninth ODI hundred. The run against New Zealand would have done the bowlers a world of good. For much of New Zealand's innings it seemed that Williamson had made the better assessment as he amassed a century and a hefty total loomed, but a late collapse and six-wicket haul from Josh Hazlewood kept Australia firmly in the contest.

The Australian opening stand, David Warner and Aaron Finch, were sent to pavilion by Trent Boult and Adam Milne respectively.

The all-rounder was followed off the pitch by the rest of the players though as the heavens opened again to curtail the match.

Between overs 31 and 33, the pair plundered 25 runs between them and Williamson hit another six and a four in 34th over which also saw the dismissal of Taylor when he top edged to cover fielder to give Hastings his second wicket.

An undercooked Australian attack was bludgeoned by Luke Ronchi (65 off 43), then clinically dismantled by Kane Williamson (100 off 97) in a match that eventually ended up as a washout due to the incessant rain at Edgbaston.

Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood ran through New Zealand's lower-order after giving his team the first breakthrough by getting rid of Martin Guptill. "We need to keep that going and move on". "When I first played for England, I had never really seen myself on television"."The new bat sensor powered by the Intel Curie technology that can be mounted on any cricket bat to generate data for every stroke that the batsman plays", said a statement by ICC.

The arrival of Ross Taylor and some tidy bowling from Travis Head combined to slow down the New Zealand charge before Taylor departed departed for a relatively sluggish 46 from 58 deliveries.

But just when Moises Henriques was dismissed and the Black Caps celebrated, rain pounded the stadium to leave them a disappointed lot.

There is great latitude given to players adopting the "positive" approach but to waste six balls by being dismissed before your allotted overs, will seem careless to many and they should have posted over 300 from their 46 overs.

With the game is concerned, New Zealand will expect swing bowlers Tim Southee and Trent Boult, and their joined performances can cause some damage.

Milne then removed Finch and Henriques, who both looked out of sorts.
