3 ex-Penn State officials sent to jail in Sandusky scandal

Three former Penn State University officials were sentenced to serve time in prison Friday for their roles in the Jerry Sandusky sex assault case.

Former athletic director Timothy Curley, 63, was sentenced to seven to 23 months incarceration and two years probation.

Graham Spanier, 68, once the nation's highest-paid public university president, was ordered incarcerated for four to 12 months with two years probation. Spanier went to trial and was convicted, while Schultz and Curley pleaded guilty to a child endangerment charge in March. But, Liddle said, "it is my hope that by spending some time behind bars, they not only will atone for their crimes, but will spend each day thinking about what they can do to make the world a safer place for children".

Sandusky, a former assistant coach in Penn State's football program, is serving a 30- to 60-year term in prison after he was convicted on 45 counts of child sexual abuse.

The three former Penn State officials all apologized for their actions and to Sandusky's victims before the sentences were handed down.

The trio of former admins will begin their respective sentences on July 15. "I'm sorry that I didn't do more, and I apologize to the victims". The judge said he was not convinced that Spanier was "totally responsible" for the failure to report Sandusky to authorities, noting that he had relied on the judgment of the other two men.

For almost six years, the case has roiled Penn State and its supporters, stirring conversations and changes across college campuses and their athletic programs.

Penn State has paid out almost a quarter-billion dollars in fines, settlements and other costs associated with the scandal, and the football program suffered heavy NCAA sanctions.

Then, in 2001, former assistant football coach Mike McQueary testified that he told Curley and Schultz that he'd witnessed Sandusky molesting a boy in the team shower facilities late one night.

The sentence is for his part in failing to tell police about a sexual abuse incident involving former Assisstant Footbal Coach, Jerry Sandusky. Friday, Spanier indicated he will appeal the conviction. The emails the men exchanged in 2001 - in which Curley suggested changing the plan and Spanier agreed - formed the core of the prosecution's case. But in documents filed on the eve of the sentencing, they assailed the two men over their testimony at Spanier's trial. Boccabella said Paterno "could have made that phone call without so much as getting his hands dirty".

In sentencing memos, prosecutors accused Curley in particular of "astonishing" and unbelievable memory lapses on the witness stand.

Both the judge and prosecutors Friday thrust blame onto Paterno himself.

She said he kept Penn State trustees in the dark about the Sandusky complaint and "he allowed children to be harmed".
