Yemen cholera cases could hit 300000 within six months

242 deaths in Yemen in three weeks due to cholera: WHO

The cost in lives from an infection rate on this scale would be "extremely, extremely high", he said, adding that "the speed of the resurgence of the cholera epidemic is unprecedented [for Yemen]".

More than 200 people have been killed by a cholera outbreak in war-ravaged Yemen the World Health Organisation said on Friday.

The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation calls upon the global community, the worldwide organizations and the civil society organizations to intensify their efforts in supporting the Republic of Yemen to contain the cholera epidemic, stop its spread and address the humanitarian and health situation, which has significantly deteriorated.

Cholera, which causes severe diarrhea and dehydration, is transmitted through contaminated drinking water and could prove fatal in up to 15 percent of untreated cases.

Cholera has killed 315 people in Yemen in under a month, the World Health Organization has said, as another aid organisation warned Monday the outbreak could become a "full-blown epidemic".

Zagaria pointed out that humanitarian workers cannot access some parts of the country, and that the number of suspected cholera cases could be far higher than those registered.

At the same time, he said, lacking electricity meant water pumping stations were only functioning in an intermittent way, and the sewer systems were damaged. ICRC's Dominik Stillhart had told reporters in the Yemeni city of Aden there were 11,000 more suspected cholera cases across the war-torn country.

Reining in the disease is particularly complicated in Yemen, where two years of devastating war between the Houthis and government forces has left more than half the country's medical facilities out of service.

"Cholera continues to spread in Yemen", it said.

While the outbreak first erupted in October previous year, the incidence of the disease dropped significantly in December, though it was never fully under control.

Water and sanitation need urgent improvement to hold it back, he said. The campaign also aims to crush the Houthi Ansarullah movement.

The lack of local health centres - and the fact that staff haven't been paid in seven months - have left Yemenis with no option but to seek help from hospitals, which WHO says are now "overwhelmed".
