World's heaviest woman leaves hospital 715 pounds lighter

36-year-old woman Eman Ahmed Abdel Ati

Eman Ahmed, who was known as the world's heaviest woman, has left for Dubai for her further weight loss treatment.

During the latter part of the treatment, a row erupted with Shaaima and the Saifee Hospital authorities levelling allegations against each other.

According to Lakdawala, Eman's weight has now come down to 170 kg (as on Wednesday evening). It can take time.

Officials said this was a tactic by the family to delay Eman's discharge because no medical facility in Egypt is willing to provide free medical services. Likewise, BJP leader Shaina NC was also present. "Which doctor would be out of his mind to seek publicity on the most hard case where the odds are so heavily loaded against you?" he said last night on NDTV, responding to criticism of Ms Ahmed's privacy being compromised. "I think the state government will have to form some standard operating protocol for handling such complex cases".

The doctor said that Shaimaa insisted she had wanted the hospital (Saifee) to keep Eman till she could walk and the management said that was not possible because of the advice they had received from one the foremost orthopaedic surgeons in the country. "It was necessary to confirm that everything is in order", Shaina NC said.

Still, doctors went ahead with the treatments which included an all liquid diet and a bariatric surgery which led to a reported loss of more than 240 kilograms, or about 530 pounds.

With her weight now standing at 176.6 kilograms, she will begin a year-long course of physiotherapy at VPS Burjeel hospital in Abu Dhabi, her doctors in Mumbai said. Her genetic tests had shown that she has a rare gene mutation that can not be cured through surgery. Her doctor, Muffazal Lakdawala, wrote in a recent blog post that the procedure managed to bring her massive weight down to 450 pounds, a far cry from her previous weight of 1,100 pounds. A teary Shaimaa, however, refused to comment about Saifee Hospital or bariatric surgeon Dr Lakdawala, who operated on Eman helping her to shed more than 300kg in just over two months - indeed a feather in his cap. Shaina NC, a spokesperson of the ruling BJP, was assigned to brief reporters on Ms Ahmed's condition and repeatedly reassured that doctors and nurses were providing quality care.

The final days of Ms Abd El Aty's stay in India were marred after her sister, Shaimaa Selim, released a short video on social media alleging that her sister was still unable to speak or move, and had not lost as much weight as the hospital was claiming. Lakdawala, too, had denied the charge.
